Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Prepare to conduct an AI programme. Performance criteria 1.1 Application to conduct AI on a property is completed according to breed society requirements. 1.2 Obligations of the studmaster to the mare owner are outlined in terms of breed society requirements. 1.3 Description outlines facilities required for an AI programme. 1.4 Advantages of AI are outlined in terms of convenience, safety, hygiene control, semen quality control, control of problem mares, and management. Element 2 Collect semen. Performance criteria 2.1 Artificial vagina (AV) is assembled and prepared for use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions, and individual stallion’s requirements. Range may include but is not limited to - temperature, pressure. 2.2 Penis is diverted into AV when stallion mounts, and AV held while semen is collected without causing undue interference to the stallion. 2.3 Description identifies alternative methods to AVs for semen collection in terms of preparation requirements and suitability for the property. Range 2.4 phantom mare, hormoned mare, mare in oestrous. Description outlines any breed society requirements in relation to the transportation and storage of fresh, frozen or chilled semen. Performance criteria 3.1 Methods for handling and storing semen are described according to breed society requirements. 3.2 Semen is evaluated under the microscope. Range 3.3 Semen is prepared for use or storage and description for use of extender is given. Range 3.4 may include but is not limited to - number of live sperm, concentration, quality, motility, and volume. may include but is not limited to - hygiene, buffer, nutrition, extension. Extended semen is apportioned according to the number of live sperm gathered from the ejaculate. Element 4 Prepare the mare and inseminate. Performance criteria 4.1 Mare is confirmed in oestrous in accordance with results of teasing or palpation. 4.2 Mare is prepared to prevent spread of bacteria while inseminating in accordance with stable hygiene procedures. 4.3 Pipette is gently guided through the cervix into the uterus and semen slowly deposited. Element 5 Complete documentation. Performance criteria 5.1 Documentation of horses involved in the AI programme is completed according to breed society requirements. 5.2 Results of semen evaluation are recorded according to stable procedures. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 1643 version 5 Page 4 of 4 Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
