What was done?
 Exit interviews asking for student perceptions
 Written examination of student knowledge during exit interview
 Outside reviewer compared slides of work of majors from Drawing II course and
senior show

 All Department of Art and Art History faculty members
What challenges (if any) were encountered?
 None
2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
Objective 1: Students will have integrated drawing skills into their aesthetic sensibility.
 In exit interviews, 20 of the 24 students surveyed believed they had integrated
drawing skills into their aesthetic sensibility.
 The outside reviewer found strong evidence that “sophisticated composition is being
applied to most of the senior painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture work.”
He thought that “the Drawing II lessons of space out of a variety of shapes and forms
have been interpreted into the more advanced work…” He gave concrete examples
of specific drawing skills used in each of the studio areas taught at WSU.
Objective 2: Students’ work will demonstrate an acquaintance with the materials
and procedures of five of the studio disciplines taught at WSU.
 In exit interviews, 22 of the 24 students surveyed felt they had an understanding of
the materials and procedures of the studio disciplines.
 In written exams, 23 of the 24 graduating seniors gave a clear explanation of
materials and procedures.
Objective 3: Students will show proficiency and have an in-depth understanding
of at least one studio discipline taught at WSU

In exit interviews, 22 of the 24 students surveyed felt they had proficiency and an indepth understanding of their area of concentration
 The outside reviewer wrote, “I see a wide range of styles and influences in the work
showing WSU’s diverse faculty from which the student can find their own voice.” In
summary he wrote “I see across the board solid understanding of the technical
disciplines as shown in each example and in many instances outstanding examples of
art. The body of work stands up under scrutiny showing good proficiency of studio
discipline.”
Objective 4: Students will have an understanding of the evolution of art history.
 In exit interviews, 14 of the 23 students who answered this question felt they had an
overall understanding of the evolution of western art.
 In written exams, 79.73% of the answers to art history questions were correct
Objective 5: Students will have integrated the study of original works of art into their
artistic practice
 In exit interviews, 19 of the 23 students who answered this question felt they had
integrated the study of original works of art into their artistic practice.
 In written exams, 17 students were able to give concrete examples of how they had
utilized the study of original works of art in creating their own work
3. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS




To build on students’ out of class experiences with original works of art, the
department will conduct more field trips as well as continue other successful
programs like visiting artists and informal crits
In response to exit interview comments not connected to specific learning outcomes,
continue to advocate for additional studio classroom space so that students will not be
closed out of classes and delayed in graduation
In response to exit interview comments not connected to specific learning outcomes,
continue to monitor the impact of making BFA review optional. Reassess after 2
years.

develop an orientation program to the department for new majors and transfer
students

Since the sample (1 major) was too small to provide meaningful data, it was determined
to change the department’s assessment plan to assess this degree when data from at least
10 graduates has been accumulated or after 4 years, whichever comes first.
5. NEW ASSESSMENT DEVELOPMENTS
Assessment plan changed to assess BA Studio degree when data from at least 10
graduates has been accumulated or after 4 years, whichever comes first.
