Undergraduate Dissertations Awards 2007 Below is a list of the Awards given by RGS-IBG Research Groups for undergraduate dissertations in Geography along with the Alfred Steers Prize given by the Society. Historical Geography Research Group (HGRG) Undergraduate Dissertation Prize Every year the Historical Geography Research Group in association with Cambridge University Press offers a prize of £50 to the best undergraduate dissertation based on original research and showing conceptual sophistication in any area of historical geography. The successful prize winner will also receive three books of their choice from the Cambridge Studies in Historical Geography book series and be invited to present their work at the annual HGRG Practicing Historical Geography Conference in November. One prize will be awarded annually valued at £100. Only one thesis may be submitted from any one department. Together with the thesis all submissions must include a statement from the Department including if the work was presented in any other forum, has been submitted for any form of publication, the awarded mark, position in the dissertation marks table and reflecting comments made by the examiners. Closing date: 13 July 2007 The winner will be informed by 1 September 2007 Participatory Geographies Working Group (PyGyWG) Participatory Geographies Undergraduate Dissertation Prize New for this year, and to be continued on an annual basis, the Participatory Geographies Working Group will offer a prize of £50 plus £25 worth of book tokens and a complimentary subscription to the journal of Children’s Geographies to the best undergraduate dissertation based on original research and showing conceptual sophistication in any area of participatory approaches and methods. The runner-up will be awarded a prize of £25 and a complimentary subscription to the journal Children's Geographies. This prestigious annual award (with cash prize) is open to any currently-registered undergraduate student in a UK Department of Geography, Earth Sciences or Environmental Sciences and is given to the dissertation which, in the view of the judges, most clearly exhibits the originality of thought, quality of research and excellence in presentation for which urban geographers are renowned. No substantive area of urban geography is excluded from consideration, and we welcome submissions which address any aspect of the social, economic or political life of cities. Additionally, dissertations may be based on secondary (archival) or primary data, addressing urban issues via a contemporary or historical focus. It is customary for Dissertation Tutors or Heads of Departments to nominate dissertations for this prize. The prize is open to any currently-registered undergraduate students in UK geography departments and will be awarded to the dissertation which exhibits the best overall contribution to any issue relating to health geography. Closing date: 13 July 2007 Developing Areas Research Group Undergraduate dissertation prize (DARG) The Developing Areas Research Group in conjunction with Earthscan offers an annual prize for the most promising dissertation concerning 'The Geography of Developing Areas'. The author of the winning dissertation receives £100 worth of Earthscan books of their choice, and 25% discount on any further Earthscan books ordered. The prize is open to any student taking a first degree in Geography. Students taking joint degrees are eligible to enter for the prize, provided that at least half their course is in Geography. It is suggested that no Department of Geography submits more than one dissertation for this prize. Dissertations will be evaluated by three members of the DARG Committee. Would you or your colleagues like to nominate a dissertation from your institution? If so, please send in a copy of the dissertations by the end of July this year (2007). Please note that for practical purposes we can accept no more than two dissertations from any institution and to be eligible that institution has to be in the UK. The prize is named in memory of the daughter of Professor John Stillwell of the University of Leeds. Joanna was a geography graduate of the University of Sheffield. Three prizes are available. The prize money is as follows: first prize: £25; second prize: £20; and third prize: £15. Closing date 31 July 2007 Quaternary Research Association Prize (QRA) The Quaternary Research Association, in association with the RGS-IBG, recognises the achievements of undergraduates in Quaternary science by awarding a dissertation prize (£100) for a thesis demonstrating flair and originality. This prize is open to any undergraduate; membership of the QRA or RGS-IBG is not a requirement for entry. Entries are limited to one per department but may be on any Quaternary theme. The winner will be announced at the 2008 QRA Annual General Meeting and the abstract of their dissertation published in the June 2008 issue of Quaternary Newsletter. The award is normally made at the Annual General Meeting of the RGS-IBG in early June of the subsequent year. Heads of Departments of Geography may submit one dissertation by any undergraduate undertaking a first degree in geography.
