WEATHER RECAP
After four months of above normal precipitation across the region, most of the area experienced at or below normal
rainfall in June. The driest conditions were in the Allegheny River basin. Temperatures for June were above
normal.
A northwest to southeast oriented stationary front oscillated over the southern half of the region from 17-20 June
producing small stream flooding and the most significant rises of the month on the Monongahela and main stem
Ohio Rivers.
Overall for the month rainfall averaged about 3.0 inches in the Allegheny River basin or 2.0 inches below normal. In
the Ohio and Beaver River basins rainfall averaged about 3.5 inches or 0.75 below normal. Rainfall was near
normal in the Monongahela River basin averaging about 4.5 inches.
At the Pittsburgh International Airport monthly precipitation was 2.50 inches, which is 1.62 inches below normal. In
June temperature averaged 1.6 degree/day above normal.
For the first 12 days of July, temperatures averaged 3.1 degrees above normal. Precipitation was 0.78 inches,
which is 0.82 of an inch below normal. Rainfall since January 1st was 25.36 inches, which is 4.46 inches above
normal.
RIVER FLOWS
Rivers in the upper Ohio River Valley generally receded for the first 15 days of June. The 17-20 June rain event
across east-central Ohio, southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia produced rises of 3 – 6 feet on the
Monongahela River, and 2-3 feet on the Ohio River. There were no significant rises on the Allegheny River.
HIGH WATER POTENTIAL
The high water potential is normal. Currently flows are 80-90% of normal on the Allegheny River, 100-120% of
normal on the Monongahela River, and near normal on Ohio River. Rainfall of 2.5 – 3.0 inches in 6-12 hours is
needed to bring rivers to bank full.
