CHANGES IN FIND OUT SERVICES: Due to ongoing budget cuts, the Find Out Program has been forced to make changes in their service delivery. For the present time, Find Out will be focused on maintaining the website with all the pertinent updates and additions to the Resource Directory, populating the Community Calendar with the wide variety of events that are available in Greene County and compiling and distributing the MAGIC Moments Newsletter each month. While some things have changed, our dedication to providing accurate and up to date information has not and we will continue to offer the best possible service in spite of the existing constraints. SMOKE DETECTORS: Greene County Human Services reminds county residents that FREE smoke detectors are available at Catholic Charities in Waynesburg. The smoke detectors are made available through a collaborative effort among Greene County Human Services, the Safe Kids Coalition and the Waynesburg police. PILATES EXERCISE CLASSES: January 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11 and 18 Kathy Cochran, a Certified Pilates Instructor will be teaching classes from 5 to 6 PM in the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Cost is $4.00 per session and everyone is welcome to attend. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing (Pilates is generally done without shoes). Bring a towel, water and a mat (if possible). A new Miner Training Program offered by Greene County Education Center of Westmoreland County Community College will take place from February 15th to the 18th. The cost is $275 and will include catered box lunch, materials and training instruments. This class is open to all residents of Greene and Washington counties who have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Events will include: ice skating, sled riding, hiking, a scavenger hunt, snowman building and more. Additional events: an Introduction to Geocaching (an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational device) presented by Rod Burns, PA Game Commisssion wildlife conservation officer and Tom Crist, Pa Fish and Boat commission wildlife conservation officer. Also, John Kobuchi will be presenting a demonstration on trapping. The Winter Fest will sponsor a photo contest. So please think about bringing a winter-related photo and enter it in the contest. HINI VACCINATION CLINICS: January 23, 30th and February 6th from 9 AM to noon The Pennsylvania Department of Health will be continuing their vaccination efforts through the local state health centers. MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY FAMILY PROGRAM: January 27th, February 3rd and 10th Southwest Regional Medical Center has been offering a special program for patients coping with mental illness. The weekly sessions are held from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM on the First Floor of the Medical Arts Building. Jonathan Johnson, LCSW will be the facilitator. Discussion points include: 1.) Exploring the different diagnoses and the most effective treatments, 2.) Identifying reasonable expectations for individuals suffering from mental illness 3.) Explaining the fundamentals of the Mental Health Recovery Philosophy and how it can be applied to daily living 4.) Addressing the grieving process that is associated with having loved ones diagnosed with a mental illness and 5.) Discussing the effective treatments for mental illness. HAVRILESKO AND HOLBERT BENEFIT: January 30th Stryker’s Bar and Grill (1117 Willow Rd., Waynesburg) will be hosting two separate events as a benefit for the Havrilesko and Holbert families. There will be a spaghetti dinner from noon until 6 PM (all you can eat spaghetti, salad, rolls, beverage and dessert) for a $10 donation. Local businesses will also be sponsoring a Chinese Auction with numerous gift certificates being raffled off. Mark Palmer will be providing acoustic music. From 9 PM until 1 AM the rock and roll band “Longshot” will be performing and anyone 21 years and over is invited to attend. A $5.00 minimum donation will be taken at the door and drink specials will be provided by Stryker’s. All proceeds from both events will benefit the families. VOLUNTEER TRAINING: January 30th from 9 AM to 1 PM the Hospice Care Corp. located at 102 Carmichaels Plaza in Carmichaels will be holding a special training for volunteers. This is a basic training that will introduce interested volunteers to the hospice concept of care, how care is provided in this service area and what opportunities are available for anyone who might choose to volunteer with this hospice organization. It will also cover the basics of HIPAA, risk management and volunteer record documentation. From here if an individual decides to volunteer with the organization then they may have additional training based on their area of interest. The training is free and open to the public. MISS GREENE COUNTY PAGEANT APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 10th by 4:30 PM all materials to apply for this pageant must be delivered to the Greene County Dept. of Recreation at 107 Fairgrounds Road in Waynesburg. The 20th annual Miss Greene County Pageant includes the following age categories: Tiny Miss (2-4 yrs); Petite Miss (5-7 yrs.); Junior Miss (8-11 yrs.); Young Miss (12-14 yrs.) and Teen Miss (15-17 yrs.) To qualify participants must submit a complete application, which includes several forms, $400 minimum in advertising sponsorships and 5x7 & 8x10 photos (color or black and white). This year the application fee has been waived. Contestants are judged on their photos and modeling of sportswear and formal wear. Also, there is a talent performance for all groups except Tiny Miss and only Young Miss and Teen Miss Contestants will be judged on interviews. Applications are available at the Department of Recreation office and the Greene County Commissioner's office. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Greene County Dept. of Recreation's summer day camp program. The pageant will be held on March 7th at 2 PM at Carmichaels Area High School. Meetings will be held at the CARE Center located at 35 S. West Street in Waynesburg. This support group welcomes grandparents or relatives age 45 and over who are raising grandchildren or another relative’s children. The group will continue to meet on the 4th Monday of each month offering an opportunity for grandparents and relative care givers to come together and provide mutual support and advocacy for each other. The support group meetings will be presenting eight consecutive monthly workshops entitled “Parenting the Second Time Around.” 4 These workshops are designed specifically to meet the needs of grandparents, relatives and other non-parental caregivers who are parenting related & non-related children. Topics include child and adolescent development, discipline and guidance, acknowledgement of ambivalent feelings, rebuilding a family, living with teens, legal issues and advocacy. This in turn creates a warmer and more comfortable draft-free environment for clients in their homes through the winter months. Processing of the applications is on a first-come, first-served basis of completed applications received into our agency. Learning Express Library offers a wide range of interactive, online learning centers geared to help achieve goals at school, work and in life offering opportunities for students from the elementary grades and continuing to adulthood. Mango Languages is an online language learning system that can help someone learn to converse in more than 20 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese and Greek.
