Another great event brought to you by the committee. It was reported that we had almost 100% participation – which is the way it should be!! Janet Byrnes got mooned and nobody got hurt. How can you go wrong? This year we had approx. 740 riders (about 100 of these participated in the community ride). Preliminary reports show that we netted about $7,896.00. Beanzie is tentatively set for July 13, 2014. There is a wrap-up meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Rosita’s. Please feel free to attend. Ken Doubler received a letter confirming that we were a distinguished club last year. (Aw, heck. We’re always a distinguished club – even including some of our members!) Flag Salute As our flag signifies purity, valor, and justice, may we as true Kiwanians exemplify these virtues as we serve the children of the world. Abby Chemers has the sign-up sheet for the next interclub going around. It is on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fargo in Sycamore. DeKalb is passing the gavel to the Sycamore. Meals on Wheels – we’re doing Meals on Wheels for the month of July. Amy has the signup sheet. Amy has also sent out an insurance form, so if you haven’t filled one out yet, please do so before your turn to deliver. Speaking of food, Svetlana Henrikson noted that we need to do something with the leftover food from our meetings. She had mentioned this several years ago. Melissa is going to check with Lincoln Inn to see if there’s something they can do to help us facilitate getting the leftovers to various families/organizations. Corn Fest: we will park cars at Mike Mooney’s Friday (after 3:00 p.m.), Saturday, Sunday, and also have a rummage sale there on Saturday. Stay tuned for more information and sign ups (parking separate from rummage sale). Team Leaders for parking will be Ken, Jack, Paul, Mike, Sue, Abby, Steve, Toney. Peanut day is rapidly approaching – Put on your seat belts and hold on tight. Stay tuned for further details. Greg is running in the Chicago Marathon (Oct 12), and looking for sponsors. Proceeds to go to the ELIMINATE project. Go to http://www.gofundme.com/theeliminateproject to contribute. Sue Doubler handed out statements for 4th quarter dues. Please get your dues payment to her at your earliest convenience. Did you know that next year’s international convention will be held July 17 – 20, 2014 in Tokyo, Japan? How about it?! What an opportunity. Start saving NOW! PROGRAM: Wayne Davey of the DeKalb County Highway Department gave us some facts and figures and told us about Adopt a Highway. County Highway Department maintains 190 miles of bituminous-paved highways and 45 bridge structures on the county road system. These interconnect with over 800 miles of township roads and 141 township bridges of the nineteen townships. The DeKalb County Engineer, under the direction of the County Board, makes improvements to and maintains the highway system. Some of these duties include maintaining the shoulders, ditches, drainage structures and pavement surfaces on county roads. The Department also provides inspection of all county and township bridges every two years, reporting those findings to the Illinois Department of Transportation as required by Statute. Other duties are maintaining highway and construction equipment, snow and ice removal, signing and roadside mowing. In conjunction with the County Highway Committee of the County Board, the County Engineer sets priorities for highway construction; administers the preparing and letting of contract proposals for bridge and road construction and directs the engineering staff through contract completion. The County Engineer and his staff also provide engineering expertise and advice to township highway commissioners. As a result of cooperation between township highway road commissioners, personnel and other municipal officials, (as well as a close adherence to road standards) a well maintained highway system can be found throughout DeKalb County. Did you know that in the winter, they have the snowplows out from 3:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and it takes the plows three hours to make the rounds? Best advice, be behind the plow and not in front of it. The Adopt a Road program was approved by the County Board in 1994. There is a training video if we want to Adopt a Road. I’m not sure we have enough adult supervision, but it’s worth a try! Quote for the day (not so much a quote, but I thought you would all enjoy it) An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want." Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?" The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog - now that's cool." UPCOMING PROGRAMS: (Why not invite a guest? – that could also mean prospective member!)
