The scholarships recognize his role in making dreams a reality and inspiring others to be their best. Colvin co-founded the Certified Angus Beef Program in 1978, leading the company to establish the Certified Angus Beef ® brand as the world’s leading brand of fresh beef. To be eligible for the scholarship, entrants were asked to write an essay addressing the following: Certified Angus Beef LLC has been the most successful branded beef company in the marketplace. Today, “me too” programs, many focusing on the popularity of Angus, ride on the success of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand. What must the Certified Angus Beef ® brand do to continue to be the market leader? Emily Tennant, Greensboro, N.C. wrote that the Certified Angus Beef ® brand is a market leader in beef education because it aims to teach both producers and consumers. She lists the brand’s presence in industry publications and development of a Best Practices Manual for producers as “exceptional examples of education directly aimed toward farmers, ranchers and feeders.” Tennant says, “The Certified Angus Beef ® brand’s success rests on its active approach to provide the best quality and consistency in beef.” Tennant is a senior at North Carolina State University. Upon graduation, she plans to attend North Carolina School of Pharmacy and pursue a career in large animal pharmaceuticals. She hopes to someday raise her family on an Angus farm. She believes there is no better way to teach true dedication and hard work than through personal experiences in the agricultural industry. Tennant served as Miss American Angus in 2007. In 2008, she studied beef cattle production and animal science in New Zealand. As the $3,500 scholarship winner, Tennant has accepted an internship position with Certified Angus Beef LLC in 2009. Brooke Jameson, Kindred, N.D. is a senior animal science major at North Dakota State University. She plans to attend graduate school for meat science. In the future, Jameson wants to promote products to consumers domestically and internationally, and hopes to work closely with beef producers to find niche markets. Jameson believes product uniformity is key to success. “The Certified Angus Beef ® brand guarantees a high-quality product to consumers 100% of the time. Consumers trust the brand, and I believe that the most important thing to do is to continue to earn that trust.” Jameson is president of the North Dakota State Livestock Judging Club. Jameson received the $2,500 scholarship. $1,000 Colvin Scholarship recipients Christina Egner, Shelby, Ohio is a junior animal science major at The Ohio State University. She plans to work in the livestock pharmaceuticals field, employing her favorite subjects: agriculture, communications and science. Egner is a member of the Ohio Junior Angus Association, and co-chair of the 2009 Eastern Regional Jr. Angus Show. In 2008, she was anintern in the mastitis lab at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, Ohio. She is part owner and manager of Egner Farms Angus. more- Five Students Earn Colvin Scholarships – page 3 of 3 Renee Wangler, West Branch, Mich. is a junior animal science/agriscience education major at Michigan State University. Her goal: improve communication and relations between the livestock industry and the public by teaching students accurate facts about agriculture. She also plans to own a registered cattle herd and will market calves to youth for showing purposes. Wangler is a member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and Collegiate Farm Bureau. Tiffani Pruitt, Tuttle, Okla. will graduate with an animal science degree from Oklahoma State University in May. She plans to work in the beef industry before attending graduate school. Pruitt has played an active role in the beef industry throughout her undergraduate career. She is a member of Block and Bridle, Oklahoma State Collegiate Cattlewomen and Collegiate FFA. She has also shown cattle competitively throughout the United States. Generous fundraising efforts from the brand’s licensed partners continue to grow the Colvin Scholarship Fund. One of the largest fundraisers is a golf tournament and auction, held each year in conjunction with the brand’s annual conference. This past year, donations set a new record with licensees contributing more than $67,000.
