1. JOHN2 MCKENZIE (JOHN1 MACKENZIE) was born 1840 in Scotland. He married KATE.
She was born 1842 in ohio.
Notes for JOHN MCKENZIE:
A search of census records failed to establish the whereabouts of John between the time of his
immigration, 1849, and 1870. His eldest child, William was born 1870 in Chicago, Ill. The
According to grandson, Robert, John was an engineer and had graduated from the University of
Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland. The 1880 census lists his occupation as engineer which gives
some credence the the story, this also would answer the gap in the census as he would have had
to return to Scotland to go to school. He could have returned any time between 1850 and 1870
met kate (born in ohio) and gotten married. This is not proof but it is a logical theory. If John had
remained in America he would have been 21 years old when the Civil war began and would likely
have been conscripted into the Ohio Militia. There is no record of his having served and there are
no family stories that would indicate that he had.
I wrote to the Glasgow university and ask them to check their enrollment records for John
Mackenzie (or McKenzie) born in Scotland in 1840. They had no record of John McKenzie ever
having been enrolled for any degree in the time frame between 1850 and 1870. It was suggested
that he may have studied at Strathelyde Technical School witch later became Glasgow
Mechanics institution and was ultimately absorbed into Glasgow University. I contacted the
Archivist at Strathclyde at the reply also came back negative; however it was pointed out that
their student records do not really start until 1887 although they have scanty student records prior
to that date. This is not proof that he did or did not receive his degree at one of these instructions.

There is no available Census for Ohio, 1890, Destroyed apparently by flood or fire.
Unable to locate John or Kate on 1900 census. William and Robert were shown on 1900

Jennie and William B. West.
I am assuming that John and Kate died between 1880 and 1900.

Robert and Flora got divorced by mutual agreement in 1925. They had planned to get divorced
some years earlier but decided they would wait until the children were grown. (as told by Robert
Jr. to Fred McKenzie and Ronald Woodhull, 2004)
Robert McKenzie obituary: South Bend Tribune Thursday, March 06, 1942:
"Robert McKenzie aged 64, 1221 South Franklin Street, died at 2:45 P.M., Wednesday in his
home after six months of illness. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 22, 1877, and came here
in 1913 from that city. He was a plumber. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Hearell, of
Mishawaka, two sons , Robert W.. McKenzie Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., and Raymond McKenzie
of South Bend, six grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Jean West of South Bend. Friends may call
at the Earl C. Hollis chapel until the funeral there at 2 P.M. Saturday. Rev. C.C.Brown will
officiate."
Buried at Highland Cemetery, South Bend Indiana Left of Council Oak Tree. South Bend’s rich
and colorful history began in December 1679 when French explorer Robert Rene Cavalier Sieur
de La Salle landed on the banks of the St. Joseph River, at what is now Riverview Cemetery.
Two years later, on that same site, under the shade of a great oak tree, La Salle held a council
with Indian leaders, which led to the Miami Treaties. Council Oak still stands in Highland
Cemetery today. Almost 150 years later, in 1820, Pierre Navarre built a cabin on the North side of
the Joseph river near what is now the Michigan St. Bridge. Three years later Alexis Coquillard
founded a fur trade post a short distance from the site of La Salle’s landing and the settlement
that came to be known as South Bend was founded.

and 1910. Following a short marriage to Charles Bergstrom she married Lawrence Whiteman
who died in1946 They were married in Cass County, Indiana in 1938 she never married again,
Florence is buried in St, Joseph Valley Memorial Cemetery next to Lawrence.

Raymond Baker was adopted by Fred and Lottie Woodhull in December , 1931. Sarah Catherine
and George Vernon Baker were separated before the birth of Raymond. With no income and a
two year old and a new born baby Sarah decided that for the baby's own good it would be better
to adopt him out. Raymond was given the name of Ronald Woodhull. The adoption and name
change were not done with any court involved there was no legal record. The name change was
made permanent by Raymond int the September 1949 term of the St. Joeseph County Circuit
court.
