Table S1 Ploidy levels of individual trees.

Taxonomic determinations of the trees are by the authors, or were confirmed from
herbarium specimens sent by other collectors. The classification into taxonomic sections
is from a compilation from recent taxonomic works (Talent & Dickinson, 2005).

The ploidy levels were determined by flow cytometry of leaf tissue (Talent &
Dickinson, 2005) with the exception of nine trees (ELA1–ELA9). Leaf tissue was not
collected from these individuals and so the maternal ploidy levels was inferred from that
of embryos from the seeds that were collected. The ‘probable diploids’ had DNA
measurements intermediate between the 2x and 3x estimates; as noted in the text, the
endosperm DNA in seeds from these trees is 1.5 times the embryo DNA measurement,
and we consider them to be probable sexual diploids.

We are following the practice of Dickinson and Phipps (Dickinson & Phipps, 1986) in
referring to this distinctive taxon as C. ?grandis Ashe pending further investigation of
Crataegus nomenclature.
