COURSE AIMS (Teacher centred)
1. To improve understanding of adults as learners, including consideration of the
impact on people’s lives of poor language skills and barriers to learning
2. To consider the importance of health & safety in the learning environment and
to look at safeguarding in relation to adult learners
3. To build up knowledge of the importance of equality and diversity when
working with a diverse group of adult learners
4. To look at how to help ESOL learners develop their conversation skills and
how to lead conversations, including choosing appropriate resources as an
aid

COURSE OUTCOMES (Learner centred) When you outline your course outcomes please bear in
mind how issues like Equality & Diversity, Every Learner Matters, Sustainability, Core Skills and RARPA
can be embedded in the Learning Programme.
By the end of the course learners should be able to:1. Engage with adult ESOL learners with a real understanding of their needs; treat them
with fairness and respect
2. Ensure an open, safe and welcoming learning environment free from harassment;
explain important health and safety procedures
3. Select appropriate resources to facilitate discussion with equality and diversity in
mind at all times
4. Be able to lead a Conversation Club with confidence
Progression opportunities:
Learners who successfully complete the course should be able to run, as volunteers, one of the
Conversation Clubs, which Institute and the Council are setting up in Redbridge.
Further training could include: Accredited volunteering qualification courses and Preparing to Teach in
the LifeLong Learning Sector (PTTLS), both offered by Redbridge Institute. Depending on their other
qualifications, learners could also apply for an ESOL Subject Specialist course offered by the Institute
of Education and a number of other providers.
Reminder: Details on induction and the RARPA process must be included in your SoW and reflected in your
session plan for first week.
