The student d. Distinguishes between long and short vowel sounds in spoken, one-syllable words (can and cane). Lesson Objectives (What students will know and/or do) : The student will know the difference between short and long a and e vowels. They will be able to categorize 16 words on a wordlist into 4 groups (long a, short a, long e, short e) with 85% accuracy. Enduring Understanding: Essential Questions: Why do we have letters? Key Vocabulary: short vowel, long vowel, long a, short a, long e, short e Time Procedures Introduction/hook/activation of prior knowledge The teacher will teach the students the vowel song “I like to ate ate ate apples and bananas” (all a’s have long a sound) each verse you use all a’s short, then all a’s as long e’s then as short e’s Instructional activities Demonstrate/Model (if appropriate) I will write a one syllable word on the board and teach the children the long a symbol and the short a symbol (hat). Then we will look at several words on the board and move them to their partners. All long a’s together, all short, etc. Guided Practice (if appropriate) I will write a list of words on the board and the children will categorize them on their own dry erase boards. Independent Practice (if appropriate) Can take home a worksheet and circle the correct words for each vowel sound. Differentiation Materials/Resources Song on cd, teacher, students Assessment Listen to whether or not they are using the correct vowels Teacher, students, dry Walk around room erase board, markers and check students work. Check independent homework to be sure they are doing it correctly. Review and Closure Gather students back together and go over what we have learned for today. Call individual students to the board and have them put the words in correct place. Have other students give thumbs up to encourage and agree.
