Lesson Subject/Title: Long and Short Vowel Sounds
Performance Standards: ELA1R2 The student demonstrates the ability to identify and orally manipulate
words and individual sounds within those spoken words. The student

(can and cane).
Lesson Objectives (What students will know and/or do) : The student will know the difference between short and long a and e
vowels. They will be able to categorize 16 words on a wordlist into 4 groups (long a, short a, long e, short e) with 85% accuracy.

Introduction/hook/activation of prior
knowledge
The teacher will teach the students the
vowel song “I like to ate ate ate apples and
bananas” (all a’s have long a sound) each
verse you use all a’s short, then all a’s as
long e’s then as short e’s
Instructional activities
Demonstrate/Model (if appropriate)
I will write a one syllable word on the board
and teach the children the long a symbol and
the short a symbol (hat). Then we will look
at several words on the board and move
them to their partners. All long a’s together,
all short, etc.
Guided Practice (if appropriate)
I will write a list of words on the board and
the children will categorize them on their
own dry erase boards.
Independent Practice (if appropriate)
Can take home a worksheet and circle the
correct words for each vowel sound.
