Continental Showcases Truck Tires for Construction
Pro’s at CONEXPO
 Continental HSU2+ and General Grabber OA Wide Base in spotlight
 Tires are engineered for severe duty in North American markets
CONEXPO – CON/AGG 2011, Las Vegas, Nev., March 22, 2011. Facing the challenges of the
toughest roads and driving conditions in North America, Continental Tire the Americas, LLC
(“Continental”) is showcasing its newest tires for the severe service market starting today at the
2011 CONEXPO – CON/AGG exposition in Las Vegas.
Two new tires will be on display at the Continental/General Tire booth (H-30821) that prove
Continental’s commitment to the construction and severe duty trucking customer, said Clif
Armstrong, director of commercial vehicle tire marketing for the Americas. Continental’s new
waste haul truck tire, the HSU2+, and the General Grabber OA Wide Base, an all-position
aggressive tire launched in 2010, are the centerpieces of this year’s exhibit.
“Continental is committed to providing nothing but the best in severe duty truck tires. Both the
HSU2+ and the Grabber OA Wide Base are examples of how our specialized engineering for
heavy and severe duty traffic in the North American markets has paid off, with durable truck
tires that you can count on for extended lifetimes and tough characteristics,” Armstrong said.
The HSU2+ is the next generation of Continental’s heavy truck tire designed for waste hauling
and other severe service applications. While the tire incorporates the previous HSU2’s wide
tread and shoulder ribs for improved wear, a robust cut- and chip-resistant tread compound and
unique tread groove designs to reduce stone retention, a new feature is Continental’s premier
“Stable” bead construction, said Roger Stansbie, director of truck tire engineering for the
Americas.
“The Stable bead construction is a new, technologically advanced bead design that incorporates
the best that Continental’s engineers have to offer for severe service, construction and other offroad applications,” Stansbie explained. “With the improvements we have made to the bead
design, waste haulers and other tough customers will see even longer casing lifetimes and
better structural durability with the HSU2+.”

The new Stable bead features an 18 percent increase in chafer cord density, an increase in the
amount of tear-resistant wrap at the chafer and ply edges of the steel cord, an optimized chafer
angle for improved stiffness across the body ply of the tire and an extruded sidewall, turn-up
cover and rim strip.
“For heavy, front axle load applications, the Stable bead ensures maximum performance and
greater retreadability,” Stansbie said.
Continental’s HSU2+ sports an extra-deep 26/32nds of tread depth, as well as 276 millimeters
of tread width for greater stability. It is available now in size 315/80R22.5, load range L from
authorized Continental truck tire dealers.
Fleets operating in severe service and construction applications, such as fire service, waste
hauling and concrete mixing, need confidence that their tires can handle heavy loads and stand
up to off-road conditions. The General Grabber OA (Off Road, All Position) Wide Base,
designed for super single fitment for steer and trailer positions, addresses these needs with a
high carrying capacity and reinforced shoulder to add protection against curbing and abrasions.
The tire’s 21/32nds of tread depth, coupled with a cut- and chip-resistant tread compound, also
assures these demanding customers that they can depend on this tire for long lifetimes.
The Grabber OA Wide Base carries up to 12,800 pounds in a super single fitment. The deep
grooves in the tread elements and an aggressive pattern help improve traction on soft soil and
muddy roadways. The thick undertread also resists casing penetrations from stones and other
debris often found in off-road applications, allowing for multiple retreads. While the 445/65R22.5
size is available now, additional sizes (385/65R22.5 and 425/65R22.5) are scheduled for
introduction later in 2011.
