Sexual Harassment 2013-2014 What it is - How to stop it - It is prohibited in the workplace It is damaging, costly and illegal - The time to stop it is now What is Sexual Harassment? Sexual harassment includes all unwanted sexual attention, as well as the creation of an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. Examples can include: sexually suggestive looks or gestures. sexual jokes or teasing. pressure for dates or sex. deliberate touching, cornering, or pinching. attempts to kiss or fondle. requests for sex in exchange for promotions or salary increases. Sexual harassment occurs when: submission to such conduct is made either an explicit or implicit condition of employment, OR employment decisions are based upon an individual’s reaction to such conduct, OR such conduct interferes unreasonably with the individual’s work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Remember, in order for the above conduct to be considered sexual harassment, it must be uninvited, unwanted, and non-reciprocal. What You Can Do About It As a victim, act promptly to stop sexual harassment. As an employee, be willing to assist and discuss situations and issues related to sexual harassment with your co-workers. As a supervisor, become more aware of behavior which could be defined as sexual harassment. How? Informal complaint procedures. Formal complaint procedures. Legal proceedings. Complaint Procedures Informal The informal procedure involves personally confronting your harasser, with an explanation of the offensive behavior, and a request that the harasser stop the behavior. This can be achieved by: speaking personally to the harasser writing to the harasser confronting the harasser in public If you are uncomfortable with the idea of personally confronting the harasser, consult your supervisor or one of the Sexual Harassment Consultants, who will help you deal with the harasser.
