MISS HOUSTON / MISS HOUSTON TEEN Pageant
BayStar Productions
Miss Bay Area / Teen Pageant & Miss Houston / Teen Pageant are independently conducted
and produced by BayStar Productions and is an Official Recruiter of MISS TEXAS USA and
MISS TEXAS TEEN USA. Our current Miss Houston 2012, Peyton Saverance and Miss
Houston Teen Logan Lester 2012 were both selected as semi-finalist at the 2013 state
competitions. BayStar Productions had the distinct honor of having both 2012 state
titleholders when Miss Houston 2011, Brittany Booker won the title of MISS TEXAS USA 2012
and Miss Bay Area Teen 2011, Madison Lee won MISS TEXAS TEEN USA 2012. We are
very proud of our legacy of excellence in pageantry.
Denise, is President of BayStar Productions, producing the Miss Houston and Miss Houston
Teen pageant. She has been the Director / Producer of the Miss Bay Area USA / Miss Bay
Area Teen USA pageant for eight years. She was honored when named Director of the Miss
Houston USA / Miss Houston Teen USA Pageant in January 2005 and in December 2007,
The Crystal Group awarded her the role of producer of the Houston pageants. Under her
guidance, contestants from the Houston and Bay Area pageants have been in the WINNER’S
CIRCLE, semifinalists and finalists at the state competitions, Miss Texas USA and Miss
Texas Teen USA. Four of her former titleholders have advanced to the Top 10 at MISS
USA.
Denise has 30 years of management experience in the petrochemical industry in the discipline
of distribution and logistics. As a business professional she applies her motivational and
leadership skills to the role of being an effective director. She has been involved with the Miss
Texas USA® and Miss Texas Teen USA® system supporting her daughter Nicole win the local
titles of Miss Bay Area Teen USA 1999, Miss Bay Area USA 2002 and to advance as one of
the few Texas double crown winners. Nicole is the former Miss Texas Teen USA® 2000 and
Miss Texas USA® 2003 and was 1st Runner –up to Miss Teen USA 2000® and 2nd Runner –
up to Miss USA® 2003. Denise was thrilled when she had the opportunity in 2003 to become
the Director of the Miss Bay Area USA and Miss Bay Area Teen USA Pageant and in the
current structure of the MISS TEXAS USA organization is an OFFICIAL RECRUITER of MISS
TEXAS USA and MISS TEXAS TEEN USA. Her goal has been to help young women transfer
the dream of winning a crown into an action plan for personal development. She knows first
hand the positive impact of having a dream transformed into reality by dedicating one’s self to
excellence. It is her desire to be a resource to all the contestants and for her winners to be
community leaders with a crown!
Denise and her husband Dan are most proud of their adult children Nicole and Daniel. A
breast cancer survivor, Denise volunteers for breast cancer organizations including the Komen
Houston Race for the Cure and was featured in 2004 in a calendar titled HOPE &
INSPIRATION, SURVIVING Mothers of Breast Cancer, with proceeds benefiting the Susan G.
Komen Foundation Houston Affiliate. Since 2002, Denise, Nicole and the Miss Texas USA
group have organized an annual group of area titleholders, contestants and pageant
supporters to participate in the Komen Houston Race for the Cure. It is with pride that she
works with her titleholders and area contestants on various service projects in our Houston
area communities.
The current Titleholders are:
Miss Houston – Peyton Saverance
Miss Houston Teen – Logan Lester

WARDROBE REQUIREMENTS:
1. WHAT TO WEAR FOR REHEARSALS - You should look nice at all times as you will be seen
in the hotel lobby, but dress comfortably (warm-ups, nice jeans and comfortable shoes).
2. EVENING GOWN - You will be required to provide your own evening gown for competition.
There are no specific requirements regarding the gown other than it should be full length, fit you
well, and compliment your own coloring and physical features. A good rule-of-thumb is that if you
feel good in your gown, then it will be most appropriate for your use in competition. Judges focus
on poise, overall appearance, sense of fashion and style. No single detail of the gown, hair or
make-up should garner attention. The overall effect should be elegant and sophisticated.
(A NOTE TO THE TEENS - Remember, you are competing with teenagers only. Don't
overdress and try to look an age far beyond your own but that of a classy, contemporary teen.)
3. PERSONAL INTERVIEW - For the judges' interviews, there are no specific guidelines other
than you should wear a daytime outfit that you feel is appropriate for interview, something that
suits your taste and personality. A good guideline would be to ask yourself what you would wear
for a press conference or television interview.
4. SWIMSUIT - Your swimsuit can be either a one-piece or two-piece suit. Color and style are up
to you, but generally a more conservative suit is better. You should wear high-heeled shoes with
your swimsuit, which are complimentary to your feet and legs, a skin color, taupe, clear or silver
Sandals, open-toe shoes, pumps are all acceptable, but big crazy, platforms are not. No hose are
to be worn with your swimsuit. You should reflect a fit, healthy, natural and confident physical
appearance. Remember grandparents are in the audience. No other jewelry except EARRINGS
Only – Silver or Gold Hoops!!!!
5. ON-STAGE OPENING NUMBER – Opening Number Outfit – Teens white above knee
cocktail dress silver, gold or crystal trim ok. Miss black cocktail dress above knee, silver,
gold or crystal trim ok. Silver or gold heels. No other colors. Cocktail dresses can be
simple or beaded..Accessories any silver, gold or crystal earrings or jewelry. Absolutely
no other color trim for outfit, shoes or accessories. Note: All competition shoes must have a
back or strap. No slide on shoes!
All competition & rehearsal shoes must have a back or strap - no slide on shoes).
6. SASH - You will be given a sash with your name on it. This must be worn at all times during
the weekend. You will only be given one sash, so take care of it - it will not be replaced if you lose
it. YOU WILL WEAR IT DURING BOTH SHOWS!!!
STAYING AT THE HOTEL The host hotel is Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel, 2001 Post Oak Blvd.
The contestant as well as friends and family will receive a fantastic rate. This exceptional rate is
available for anyone connected with the pageant. You may share a room with another contestant
to cut down on expenses if you would like to.
Please make your reservations directly with the hotel, as soon as possible, 713-961-9300. Please
be advised to alert the reservations clerk of your affiliation with the pageant. Failure to do so may
cause you to pay a higher room rate, which will not be adjusted upon check-out.
PAGEANT CHAPERONES Each group of girls will be assigned a chaperone who will help keep
you informed and direct you where you are supposed to be at any given time during the day. She
is there to assist you with any problems or questions you might have. Remember, these ladies
are volunteering their own free time to do this for you, so please be courteous to them and treat
them with respect. At the end of pageant activities each day, contestants will be released and will
be expected to return promptly for the start of the next day's activities.
SECURITY There will be a security guard during the pageant, but PLEASE do not leave
valuables in the dressing area. The pageant cannot be responsible for any lost or stolen
items.
MEALS Are on your own. Remember contestants cannot leave the hotel but your friends or
family can bring food for you or bring money to eat at the hotel.
JUDGING PROCESS: The judging is divided into three categories: Interview, Swimsuit and
Formal Gown. The judges are looking for an all-around girl in each age group. She may not be
the most outstanding in any one category but yet she will score highly in all categories. The
winners will have everything - poise, personality, intelligence and beauty.
In addition to choosing the new MISS HOUSTON and MISS HOUSTON TEEN, other awards to
be presented (in each age group) are:
1.
2.
3.
3.
Miss Photogenic (to be selected from photos in the program book and in-person judging)
Evening Gown Winner (to be announced during the Preliminary Show)
Swimsuit Winner (to be announced during the Preliminary Show)
Miss Congeniality (to be announced during Final Show)
CONTESTANTS-AT-LARGE - In addition to the winner of the pageant, several other high-scoring
contestants will be invited to go on to the state competition as "Contestants-at-Large." While the
winner's entry fee are part of her prizes, the Contestants-at-Large are responsible to pay their
own expenses.
PAGEANT EVENTS
REHEARSALS - Rehearsals are the key to a truly successful show and pageant weekend.
Rehearsals take a great deal of time and hard work. Be prepared for this.
LISTEN! BE COOPERATIVE! FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! BE ON TIME!
Rehearsals are closed as we have found the contestants are distracted by those attending the
rehearsals. The location allows for plenty of shopping and restaurants for family and friends in
the Galleria area.
Preliminary / Presentation Show – This is a ticketed event. All the contestants are
introduced to the audience and compete in swimsuit and evening gown competition. Following
the preliminary / presentation show swimsuit, evening gown and photogenic special award
winners will be announced.
FINAL SHOW - This is a very entertaining and exciting event. After the announcement of the
semi-finalists, the semi-finalists will compete in Swimsuit and Evening Gown. The show will
begin with the Opening Production and the introduction of each contestant to the audience
and then the announcement of the Semi-finalists who will then compete again in Swimsuit and
Gown, leading into the announcement of the Top 5, Top 5 Interview, and then the
announcement of the Runners-up and Winners. All contestants will be seen at different times
throughout the show. This is a ticketed event and open to the paying public.

PROGRAM BOOKLET Years from now many of you will still have your program booklet. It is the
greatest souvenir of this very memorable weekend. We are planning a booklet that will be a great
keepsake for you.
Every contestant will have a roster photo in the program book, with one sponsor noted beneath it.
In addition to this, every contestant has the option to buy additional full pages as "Good
Luck" pages or Sponsor Advertisements (See Ad Specs and Samples insert). These pages
can be a great tool for you to use when recruiting sponsors as they can be laid out with whatever
picture(s) and information you would like on them. There are two ways this can be handled:
1. You can purchase these pages for $195 each, if submitted in electronic “print-ready”
form. "Print-ready" form means that the page (8-1/2" x 11") is typeset, with professional
lettering, and laid out, in black and white, just as you want it to appear in the program
book. Please submit computer disk along with a printout. (See Ad Specs)
2. If the page is not submitted in "camera-ready" form, add $50, so the cost is $245. We
can do the lay-out for you. All we will need is the information and photo(s) to be included
on the page.
Please turn these pages in to our office, along with payment, by Feb. 28th.
The program book designer is Sarah Graybeal Ruiz and her email is:
sarah@baystarproductionsinc.com Send electronic professional quality photos and ad pages to
her for better print quality. Make sure the spelling is correct on your ad page and with your photo
advise if a teen or miss contestant. Also make sure Sarah has your email address if she needs to
communicate to you. Communication to Sarah should be via email. The ad page must be paid
when submitting in the program book.

coaches, personal helpers, hairdressers, make-up artists, etc.) will be allowed
backstage at any time.

where they are going.
6. Contestants and their family will be responsible for any medical expenses incurred during the
pageant. If taking any medication, have your physician write us a note. If you have any
medical problems, advise us prior to the pageant. This will have no affect on the competition.
SEE ENCLOSED MEDICAL FORM.
7. NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN DRESSING ROOMS (other than that provided by the pageant)!
8. NO SMOKING, DRUGS OR ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES!
9. Outside of the competition, contestants, parents, friends, relatives, etc. should not approach
the judges, the judges’ coordinator, or auditors at any time for any reason!!!
10. Pantyhose or stockings are not permitted during the swimsuit competition.
11. No full wigs. Hairpieces are permitted.
12. All shoes worn during competition and rehearsals must have a back or straps. No slide on

14. No Public Display of Affection with boyfriends. This includes, kissing, constant prolonged
hugging, walking arm in arm, handholding, etc. If in doubt, choose caution. You never know
when you may set an example. Make sure it is a good one.
15. Remember that only one young lady can wear the crown. We know you will continue to act
like a winner with respect to the Pageant and its staff, and most importantly, to yourself.
Any misconduct, non-observance of rules or disrespect by a contestant is
grounds for immediate dismissal from the Pageant as determined by Pageant
Officials.
KEEPING EXPENSES DOWN
The information contained here is for those who have limited budgets or who wish to keep their
expenses to a minimum (like most of us). It is our purpose to provide you with information
regarding which costs are fixed and which expenses can be left to your discretion. In other words,
competing in a pageant need not cost thousands and thousands of dollars.
The following are fixed expenses:
Pageant entry fee
These items are necessary, but the cost is variable:
1. Competition wardrobe
a. Evening gown
b. Interview outfit
c. Opening number outfit
d. Swimsuit
e. Shoes & accessories
2. Clothing for non-competition activities (rehearsals)
3. Photos
Other:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Ad page in program book (optional)
Show tickets, preliminary and final, for family and friends
Hair & nail care
Make up
Coaching/training
Incidental expenses while at pageant
Something you should always keep in mind - that as nice as it would be to have special outfits for
all activities, the judges see you only in interview outfit, evening gown, swimsuit and opening
number. It is not a contest of who has the best wardrobe.
Now, to get a little more specific on the areas where you can economize:
1. Evening gown. A fantastic gown in itself does not win a pageant. Quite often, the
winner is not wearing the most exquisite or most expensive gown, but she looks great in
the gown she is wearing. It is the overall picture that counts. We have had state
winners in borrowed dresses. When shopping for a gown if you have a budgeted
amount advise the sales person and ask if they can work within your limit. I have found
even the highest end stores often have fabulous sales. Ask!!! You may find a sponsor
to provide, loan, or sell you a gown at cost. (This can be tax-deductible for a sponsor.)
2. Interview outfit. Just as with the evening gown, your interview outfit should be one that
flatters you and one in which you feel comfortable and look attractive. The judges are
looking at the overall picture, not at which designer you are wearing. You may already
have a dress or a suit in your closet that would be suitable, or you might borrow one.
3. Swimsuit. We suggest a suit off the rack at a department store. Solid colors and
muted patterns are always attractive onstage and can be purchased online. Remember
modesty and an appropriate fit that your grandmother could see you in but not a
swimsuit for your grandmother!
4. Shoes & accessories. Make your shoes do double duty. The same pair of neutral,
silver, or clear shoes could be worn with swimsuit, and/or evening gown. Also, check
your closet and see what you already have that could work for part of the competition.
Your jewelry need not be costly; watch for sales, check the discount stores, borrow from
a friend.
5. Clothing for non-competition activities. You do not need special rehearsal clothing.
6. Photos. You probably already have a great photo but if not look for a sponsor or use
the Express Package offered by Select Studios.
7. Ad Page. This is optional, but can be an excellent tool to help you get sponsors. Often,
a sponsor will pay for the page in order to be featured on it, and you can use it to
recognize your other sponsors.
8. Hair and Nail Care. See if your salon will provide these services free in exchange for a
mention on your ad page in the program book. Remember we do not provide special
time or facilities for hair or makeup artists, nor are they allowed to set up in the public
areas of the hotel.
9. Make-up. We recommend that you learn to do your own make-up for competition; you
need to know how to do this yourself. Take a lesson.
10. Coaching/Training Workshops and seminars are at a cost much less than private
sessions. Take one or two private lessons if you like and then practice in front of your
mom, friend or in front of a mirror.
11. Incidentals. This includes food not provided by the pageant, etc. How much you spend
on these items is entirely in your control and can cost almost nothing if you plan ahead
and do not spend money unnecessarily.
In Summary:
1.
Know which expenses are unavoidable and which costs can be minimized or eliminated
altogether.
2.
Avail yourself of free or reduced-cost services, provided in exchange for a place on your ad
page.
3.
Find sponsors to help cover your costs. We provide you with a sponsor letter and tips on
finding sponsors. Sponsors may provide services, wardrobe, and/or financial support.
4.
Shop sales, discounts and consignment. Borrow, rent and/or use items you already have.
Prepare yourself. Be as physically fit as possible. Practice doing your own hair and make-up.
Keep up with current events—read & watch world news!
HOW DO I OBTAIN SPONSORS?
Sponsor involvement is most easily obtained via personal relationships and business contacts. Ask friends
and relatives if they have a business contact that might consider sponsoring you and if so perhaps they will
introduce you to the potential sponsor. Basically, if a sponsor believes in you and your “mission”—he or
she will sponsor you! Often, one sponsor may pay the total amount. However, if this isn’t the case,
graciously accept their sponsorship because every little bit helps. Follow with a thank you note. It is your
job to keep them interested and informed.
It is difficult to obtain a sponsor over the phone. A personal interview will work best. You have to “sell
yourself”, just as you would in a job interview or the judge’s interview at the pageant. This is great
preparation for the pageant interview! Look nice when you call on potential sponsors—dress up and look
the part of a beauty pageant contestant. Tell the sponsor about yourself, why you want to participate, and
why they should sponsor you.
Be sure to pick the right time of day (not during peak business hours), to talk to the decision-maker, be
original, friendly, prompt, and have the right answers. Read all of your information and have a full
understanding of the pageant. You never know what a potential sponsor may ask. Answer questions
sincerely and intelligently. Show them ad pages from last year’s program book.
Very important: If the sponsor asks when you need the money, the answer is “now”. You may think that
you have a commitment only to have the sponsor back out at the last minute, leaving you no time to find a
replacement. This happened to us when my daughter was preparing for a pageant.
Most importantly…Never give up! Many have been discouraged for one reason or another but continued
to seek sponsorship, and it paid off. You even want to obtain a few more sponsors than needed to meet
your obligations to the pageant in order to help with you wardrobe, etc. You may have as many sponsors
as you need. If you have a number of sponsors, you will want to purchase a program ad page where you
can list them and give them recognition.
What does the sponsor get? Sponsorship is a form of advertising and/or promotion for a business or
organization. You may offer promotional services in return for sponsorship which aids you in participating
in the pageant. All arrangements are strictly between you and the sponsor. There is no form from the
pageant for the sponsor to complete.
With whom do I start? Some delegates are sponsored by companies where they or their family
members work. Personal connection is one of the easiest ways to generate sponsorship and support.
Remember that you can be sponsored by your family, employers, your school, civic/social organizations,
friends, or yourself. You may have the best success with businesses you and your family patronize.
Suggested businesses to contact: grocery store, doctor, dentist, cleaners, gas station, beauty salon,
boutique, photo studio, hotel, resort, bank, your church, PR firm, dance studio, shopping center, sports
team, advertising firm, auto dealer, chamber of commerce, cosmetics shop, modeling agency, health
studio, restaurant, sorority, fraternity, construction company, real estate office, insurance firm, accounting
firm, law firm, Jaycees, Elks Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Rotary Club, other civic clubs and
organizations. The list is endless—be creative!
Why everyone benefits: Any donation provided by a business or organization is considered a form of
advertising and/or promotion and may be considered tax deductible if listed in the programbook. The
entrant, on the other hand, receives the necessary financial backing and is able to take part in this
worthwhile and spectacular event. And who knows—you could be the next one to win the state and
national title!
