Only meaningful discussion and examination of words will help you integrate
new vocabulary into your existing knowledge structures. This biweekly assignment is
designed to encourage such activities. The research of those who study the brain reveals
that semantic mapping or analysis of words yields the greatest improvement in the area of
vocabulary development. Furthermore, these studies prove again and again that inclusion
of the vocabulary in the curriculum results in students learning more words than those
who simply receive a list of words they must memorize and recognize on a test.
