Unit Project Design an Eagle Sanctuary (1-4 students) PRODUCT: Plan for Pembroke Pines Eagle Sanctuary SUBJECT: Bald Eagle habitat and public involvement, education and safety Research and Take Notes Research Bald Eagle habitats. Keeping in mind that all biotic and abiotic factors are interrelated, find out which factors are an important part of an eagle habitat in Pembroke Pines. Hypothesis how the alteration or removal of any of these elements, or the addition of any not currently present elements, may impact the attractiveness of a nest site to a pair of eagles looking for a new nest site. You should focus some research on the differences of “urban eagles” compared to more traditional, rural eagles. Take notes based on your research. Include a bibliography. Search for a location. Using what you have learned during your research, find a suitable location to develop your Eagle Sanctuary. You should consider the needs of the eagles, as well as the needs of the public. Is the land publicly owned or available for purchase? Does it contain the most important elements to ensure the reproductive success of the eagles? Include the public. Someone will have to pay for creating the Eagle Sanctuary. Devise a plan that addresses this issue. Will there be community fundraisers? What will they entail? Will a corporate donor be solicited? If so, what will compel them to donate the large sum of money necessary? How much money will be required? One way to encourage public funding is to offer the public a valuable resource in exchange for their donations. Will there be an educational aspect to your Eagle Sanctuary so that the public can view and learn about the eagles? If so, how will the eagles be protected from disturbing intrusion from a public that doesn’t always understand the reclusive nature of Bald Eagles. Be sure to address safety issues such as traffic in the area and children wandering close to the road while their eagle viewing parents are distracted. Plan and Create Your Sanctuary Presentation Decide on the medium. What kind of presentation will you make? Will you present a poster, a photo album, or another way such as a Power Point presentation? Plan your display. Come up with a catchy title and layout. Your presentation should include a visual that shows where the sanctuary will be located and how the public will be involved in developing your plan. Prepare your presentation. Brainstorm a “hook” to capture the audience’s attention. Organize your presentation of the sanctuary details so that the audience clearly understands the need for, and appropriateness of each element.
