________________________________________________________________________ Jerusalem January 12, 2011 005/2011 Record Number of Tourists in Israel Almost 3.5 Million Visitor Arrivals in 2010 In 2010, there were close to 3.5 million visitor arrivals – a record number since the founding of the State of Israel and an encouraging start to the second decade of the 21st century, especially since most of the years of the first decade were characterized by a low point in tourism. 2010 (Table A): Visitors – Tourists and Day Visitors Visitors In 2010, there were 3.45 million visitor arrivals to Israel, an all-time record. This was an increase of 26% compared to 2009 (in January 2009, due to Operation "Cast Lead" in the Gaza Strip there was a decline in the number of visitor arrivals to Israel), and a 14% increase compared to 2008, which was the previous record year. Tourists1 There were 2.8 million tourist arrivals in 2010 – an all-time record – and among them 2.3 million were by air – an increase of 18% compared to 2009 and an increase of 10% compared to 2008. Of arrivals by air most of them (2.3 million) were via Ben Gurion Airport (an increase of 18% compared to 2009) and 60,000 arrivals were from Elat (up 23% over 2009). Tourist – a visitor who stayed in Israel and departed on a date that was different from the date of entry (i.e., not on the same day). 1 For explanations and clarifications please contact the Press Relations Unit, at 02-652 7845 The tourists who entered Israel from the Elat and Uvda airports arrived mainly from the following countries: Russia: 23,100 France: 18,300 Finland: 6,600 Poland: 4,700 There were 490,000 tourist arrivals by land - an increase of 37% compared to 2009 and about 5% over 2008. Visitors Arrival to Israel: 2010 12/01/2011 2 Day Visitors2 During 2010, there were 642,000 arrivals of day visitors (169,000 of those were cruise passengers3) – an increase of 53% compared to 2009. This increase can be explained by the decline in arrivals in 2009 due to Operation Cast Lead. The increase in arrivals of visitors by land and of cruise passengers was even greater, but the total increase was curtailed somewhat by a 17% decline in arrivals by air (the day visitor arrivals by way of air comprised only 11% of the total arrivals of day visitors in 2010). The number of arrivals of cruise passengers in 2010 was more than double compared to 2009 and more than 3 times that of 2008. December 2010 (Table A) Visitors – Tourists and Day Visitors In December, 2010, there were 269,000 arrivals of visitors to Israel – an increase of 19% compared to 2009 and 33% compared to 2008 (it should be noted that in December 2008 the tension in the Gaza Strip began, which preceded Operation Cast Lead in January 2009). Tourists In December 2010, there were 217,000 tourist arrivals (80% of total visitor arrivals in December 2010) - an increase of 12% compared with December 2009 and an increase of 21% compared to December 2008. Of tourist arrivals, 181,000 were by air. Most of them - about 173,000 arrivals were via Ben Gurion Airport - and about 9,000 arrivals were on direct flights to Elat. There were 36,000 arrivals by land – 21,000 (57% of the total arrivals by land) were through the border crossings with Jordan and another 15,000 were through the border crossing with Egypt - Elat (Taba). Day Visitors In December 2010, there were 65,000 arrivals of day visitors, about 32,000 of them were by land, and about 3,000 by air; there were also 18,000 arrivals of cruise passengers that comprised about a third of the total arrivals of day visitors. 34,000 (84% of the arrivals) of the arrivals of day visitors by land were through Elat border crossing (Taba). Almost all of the arrivals of day visitors by way of air – 3,000 arrivals – were through Ben Gurion airport. The main countries from where the day visitors arrived by way of the Elat border crossing (Taba) - December 2010: Russia – 17,300 Ukraine – 3,900 Poland – 2,100 2 Day visitors are those who arrive and depart from Israel on the same date (the same day), including cruise passengers. Cruise passenger – a tourist on a shore cruise who enters Israel for a day or two and spends the night on board the ship. 3 Visitors Arrival to Israel: 2010 12/01/2011 3 Visitor Arrivals from 2000 to 2010 – Overview The millennium year (2000) looked more promising than ever and was supposed to be a year of a turning point for tourism. There was hope for a surge in tourism due to the Pope's visit in March 2000, however, the Second Intifada broke out in the last quarter of the year and dashed these hopes. The year finished with a moderate increase of only 4% compared to 1999. At the end of 2000, and the years that followed there were many security incidents (a continuation of the Second Intifada 2001-2003, the Second Lebanon War in 2006 and Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2009). Only eight years later (in 2008), was the previous record of the year 2000 broken. In 2007, a new phenomenon of day visitors by land began - most of the day visitor arrivals by land were visitors from East European countries entering Israel from Sinai via the Elat border crossing (Taba). (See Diagram 2, and Table B). In 2007 the day visitor arrivals were 10% of all visitor arrivals, and in 2010, they comprised 19% of the arrivals. Altogether there were over 20 million visitor arrivals from 2001–2010, 2 million visitors on the average per year. The year of the lowest point was 2002 (862,000 visitors), the peak year was 2010 (as mentioned, approximately 3.5 million arrivals). The Decade of 2000-2010 – Visitor Arrivals (Diagram 1) 2001 was characterized by the decrease in foreign visitor arrivals that began in the last quarter of 2000 (the outbreak of the Second Intifada). The low point in visitor arrivals deepened especially in 2002 (less than one million visitor arrivals). Although in the years 2003-2004 there began to be a recovery in the number of arrivals, it was still low (1.3 million on the average per year). In 2005 there was a recovery and there were nearly 2 million arrivals. 2006 was marked by the Second Lebanon War (July 2006), which was followed by a sharp drop in arrivals in the period between July to December (the year ended with 1.8 million arrivals). 2007 was a turning point, and the number of visitor arrivals exceeded 2 million arrivals (2.3 million). 2008 was a bountiful year in visitor arrivals and there were more than 3 million visitors. 2009 began at a low point (due to Operation "Cast Lead"), which lasted for the first half of this year, and at the end there were 2.7 million visitor arrivals. About 40% of the visitor arrivals from Russia were day visitors. There was an increase of 38% in the arrivals of tourists from Russia compared to Visitors Arrival to Israel: 2010 12/01/2011 5 2009. Regarding the arrivals from the Ukraine, the proportion of day visitors declined from 49% among all the arrivals to 39% in 2010. There was an increase of 24% in the visitor arrivals from Germany compared to 2009. Day Visitors4 Over the course of the decade the number of cruise passengers declined and in the years 2002-2007 it almost dropped to nothing. Beginning in 2008, there was a recovery in the traffic of tourist ships that anchored in the Israeli ports and the number of cruise passengers rose progressively from 46,000 visitors in 2008 to 169,000 visitors in 2010. Simultaneously, the phenomenon of day visitors expanded very much, especially by way of land. In 2007 the day visitors comprised 10% of the total visitor arrivals to Israel, whereas in 2010 the percentage of day visitor arrivals increased to 19%. Visitors Arrival to Israel: 2010 12/01/2011 6 Tourist Arrivals (Air and Land) Seasonal and Trend Adjusted Data5 (Diagrams 1 and 2, Table 2) An analysis of the seasonally adjusted data indicated that in the last three months, October - December 2010, there were 245,000 tourist arrivals on the average per month (2.9 million at annual level), whereas in the months July - September 2010 there was an average of 228,000 visitors per month (2.7 million at annual level). An analysis of the trend indicated that in the last three months, October December 2010, there was an increase of 5% at annual calculation (an average of 0.4% per month), in comparison to July - September 2010 in which there was an increase of 8% at annual calculation (an average of 0.6% per month). Tourist Arrivals by Air (Diagrams 3 and 4, Table 2) An analysis of the seasonally adjusted data indicated that in the last three months, October - December 2010, there was an average of 202,000 tourist arrivals per month (2.4 million at annual level), and this was after there was an average of 187,000 tourist arrivals per month (2.2 million at annual level) in July - September 2010. A trend analysis indicated that in October - December 2010 there was an increase of 3% at annual calculation (an average of 0.2% per month), and this was similar to July - September 2010. A detailed and updated explanation about the process of seasonal and trend adjustment is published in Seasonal and Prior Adjustment Factors for 2010, Trends for 2006-2010 (on the CBS website alone: Definitions, Classifications, and Methodology, Statistical Methods, Time Series). The next Press Release on the subject "Visitor Arrivals to Israel in January 2011" was published on February 9, 2011. 5 The data of tourist arrivals in Israel are influenced by seasonal changes, therefore, they should be analyzed based on seasonally and trend adjusted data. Despite this, it should be emphasized that because of the calculation methodology used in the CBS, the trend of the last months is likely to change when new data are received or an update of the previous new data.
