AQUATIC ENTOMOLOGY ENTM 4280 OBJECTIVES A. Lectures 1) To present students with the relationships between aquatic insects and their specific habitats, through: a) examination of the physical environment b) examination of specific adaptations to that environment. 2) To provide a basic understanding of the principles of aquatic entomology (e.g. trophic relationships, patterns of spatial distribution, sampling, experimental design). 3) To provide an introduction to applied aspects of aquatic entomology (e.g. environmental impact and assessment, aquatic insects as indicators of environmental quality, aquatic insects as food for fish and waterfowl). B. Labs/Collection 1) To give the students the opportunity to observe structural adaptations in aquatic insects. 2) To allow students to become familiar with procedures and problems in taxonomy and identification of all developmental stages of aquatic insects. 3) To have students gain an appreciation of the limitations of applied and ecological studies in aquatic biology. 4) To encourage the development of expertise in recognition and identification of all stages of aquatic insects.
