EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE
Sergey A. Bulat is a Head of Research Group, Senior Researcher, Staff Scientist of Molecular
Microbial Phylogenetics at the Department of Molecular and Radiation Biophysics in the Petersburg
Nuclear Physics Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg-Gatchina, Russia. Dr. Bulat
earned his Ph.D. in [microbial] genetics from the Leningrad State University in 1984. His research
interests include microbial diversity and molecular phylogenetics and survival of microbial DNA over
time in extreme icy (polar ice sheets and subglacial lakes) environments. In addition, his interests
include methodical (gene amplification based) innovations in studies of microbial communities.
Through a combination of especially developed contaminant-free while very sensitive experimental
approaches, he has explored the limits of microbial life in both polar glaciers and subglacial lake
environments exemplified by the Lake Vostok. He has demonstrated the Lake Vostok frozen water as
well as deep aged glacial ice above contains a very low biomass indicating that the water body (at
least upper layer) should also be hosting a highly sparse life, if any. He has made major contributions
to the understanding of life potential in subglacial Antarctic lake environments. Dr. Bulat is a
member of various professional organizations including: the American Geophysical Union, the
Federation of European Microbiological Societies, and the SCAR Scientific Research Program
‘Subglacial Antarctic Lake Environments’ (SALE).
