TREC-STEP’s Start-up Entrepreneurs have bagged the highest number of “National Awards for Incubatees for the year 2010” among the Indian Incubators awarded by the Indian Science and Technology Entrepreneurs’ Parks and Technology Business Incubators Association (ISBA). Out of the 9 National awards, 3 awards have been won by the TREC-STEP incubatees.
TREC-STEP’s Start-ups have also received two National Awards for its Incubatees for the year 2009 instituted by
ISBA.
One of the TREC-STEP Entrepreneurs has also been awarded the Asian Association of Business Incubation’s ‘
2010 Best Entrepreneur’ as the first Indian entrepreneur to receive this honour
Tiruchirappalli Regional Engineering College – Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park ( TREC-STEP) is the first
Science Park promoted in India by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, together with State and
Central Financial institutions and the parent host institution National Institute of Technology(NIT), Trichy ( formerly
Regional Engineering College). The organization was founded in the year 1986. The aim of TREC-STEP is promotion of knowledge based ventures of young entrepreneurs, providing incubation support and new industrial development initiatives for the region. TREC-STEP has been established in 50 acres of land adjacent to the parent education institution, National Institute of Technology, Trichy. TREC-STEP has 15 nursery incubators with an incubation space of more than 40,000 sq. ft. available for knowledge based industries of young entrepreneurs. It has central machining, design and information facility to support the start-up ventures. TREC-STEP has also a global connectivity facility from
Software Technology Parks of India, an earth station of 8 mbps capacity upgradable further on future requirement.

With all the facilities and expertise from parent institution, TREC-STEP has incubated 186 ventures of young Science and
Technology persons, the highest number of start-ups incubated so far by any Business Incubator in India. Many of these ventures promoted by young science and technology persons have become highly successful and able to demonstrate the effectiveness of TREC-STEP incubation support. TREC-STEP is also been involved in new innovative developmental initiatives by partnering with international developmental organizations such as the World Bank, European
Union, UNDP, UNIDO and BCD to nurture technological and entrepreneurial skills and for promoting cross cultural ventures.
To promote start-up ventures of young entrepreneurs, TREC-STEP provides a spectrum of Entrepreneurship Development initiatives covering, Business Training, Nursery incubation sheds for starting the ventures for a period of 3 to 4 years, Central
Common Machining facilities, Systems and Networking support, catalogue library, funding schemes etc. After 3 to 4 years of incubation support, the venture has to relocate to their own premises. These incubation support and facilities considerably reduce the initial investment commitments of the entrepreneurs thereby reducing the initial risk. The ready availability of mundane requirements for new ventures also enables the young entrepreneurs to concentrate on core competency development more. The availability of on-line consultancy from a team of management professionals, to analyze various business propositions and to develop suitable business strategies, provides budding entrepreneurs greater impetus.
