The new Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy place special emphasis
on the importance of students reading texts that are on grade level. To address this focus, the
Standards outline a new text complexity analysis model that can help educators select literary and
informational texts for core instruction. The model offers a lens through which we can validate that
the texts we ask students to read are of appropriate grade-level complexity to address these new
standards.
Librarians play a crucial role in the transition to the Common Core; as such, Librarians will receive
an overview of the text complexity model and have an opportunity to put the model “in action” by
utilizing a text complexity rubric and placemat for print materials. In addition, Librarians spend
valuable time assisting teachers with the location of or supply teachers with instructional materials.
UDLib/Search and a DOE Instructional Technology Consultant will be available to train and work
with librarians in locating both print and non-print resources.
Participants are welcome to bring texts used in their schools to create a placement placemat for use
by their teachers and resources for digital text to share. Participants are encouraged to bring a
laptop to work on in the afternoon.
If you have any questions, please contact DDOE at 302-735-4180. Registration is now open on
PDMS.

have been trained in and discuss the value in setting aside time for this process. Administrators will
engage in a hands-on activity to experience the process with follow up discussions on how to
address text complexity and/or movement of texts in their individual schools/districts.
