DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE
The Emergency Department
The Emergency Department has an annual attendance of 43,000 per annum with a 20% inpatient admission and transfer rate. 21% of the patients are paediatric. The E.D. is well supplied with modern equipment and in the planning stage of a major rebuild and expansion.
The direct catchment is over 140,000 and for many specialties 250,000. The E.D. receives all types of patients including major trauma - there is no bypass of any type. The hospital has all major specialities apart from vascular,neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery and hence few patients require tertiary referral. The hospital’s Imaging Department provides a high quality and prompt service for E.D. patients.

Registrar Training
The Emergency Department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency
Medicine for provisional training, and for 6 months of advanced training. It is recognised for paediatric logbook training. There is a primary training program for doctors entering the
Emergency Medicine training program and a Fellowship training program for advanced trainees.
Hours of work
Registrars and junior staff work rostered hours including nights and weekends.
Retrieval Service
The Tasmanian Retrieval Service is based in Launceston the director of which is an emergency physician. Emergency Department consultants and appropriately trained and experienced registrars have the opportunity to do retrievals.

INTENSIVE CARE:
Qualifies for one year C12 accredited training for the College of Intensive Care, ANZCA and RACP.
There are 5 registrar positions.
The ICU is a 6 bed, Level III facility providing support to all services apart from cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. It is anticipated that the Unit will expand to 9-10 beds mid 2010, with further expansion planned for 2011. The unit received 450 – 500 high acuity admissions per year, 50% of whom are ventilated, and with a mean APACHE II score of 19.6. The successful applicants will also participate in a hospital wide vascular access and TPN service.
Participation in database management and quality activities is required and research is encouraged.
The Unit has an active registrar teaching program and journal club.
Rotations with the Department of Anaesthetic medicine, Emergency Medicine or retrieval medicine could be negotiated.

The Department of Surgery comprises 25 surgeons of various disciplines.
The Department has four General, two Orthopaedic, one Urology and one Ophthalmology
Accredited Advanced Surgical Trainee positions from the Victorian/Tasmanian scheme.

SURGICAL REGISTRARS (UNACCREDITED) 4 positions
The Department has 4 Non-Accredited Surgical Registrar positions available serving ENT,
Plastics and Maxillofacial, Orthopaedics, Urology and General Surgery.

These positions are suitable for doctors with 3 years post-graduate experience who are contemplating study towards the FRACS. It is a 12-month rotation serving ENT, Plastics and
Maxillofacial, Orthopaedics, Urology and General Surgery. There is participation in the after hours surgical oncall roster. Progress to the second year of rotation is dependant on a satisfactory assessment of the Registrars’ first year and their progress with their 1 st part of the FRACS exam.

DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIA
FELLOW IN ANAESTHESIA (1 position)
This post is recognised by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists
(ANZCA) for the Provisional Fellowship year. Clinical duties are tailored as much as possible to the individual’s requirements and personal initiatives. Clinical research projects are encouraged. Assistance with the formal teaching program within the Department of
Anaesthesia is expected, as is supervision of junior registrars where appropriate.

ANAESTHETIC REGISTRARS (8 positions)
The Launceston General Hospital is accredited by ANZCA for registrar training in anaesthesia. One position is reserved for an Emergency medicine Trainee (accredited by the
College of Emergency Medicine) and another is reserved for the Rural Training Scheme of the College of General Practitioners. All registrars work for part of the year in the Intensive
Care Unit (ICU) and all advanced trainees undertake aeromedical retrieval duties.

The Department comprises the Director, a Deputy Director, 10 staff specialists, 9 visiting medical officers and 8 registrars (one registrar post is for a rural GP trainee, one for an ICU trainee in Internal Medicine and one is linked to Emergency Medicine training). Each year, four registrars rotate to the Intensive Care Unit for a period of three months each.
The Department is responsible for anaesthesia for the LGH which provides specialist services for all forms of surgery apart from cardiac, neurosurgery and neonatal surgery.
There are four to five all-day elective lists, an emergency theatre and a day surgery list.
Increasingly, anaesthesia is provided in Radiology for imaging and for many of the endoscopic procedures. The Department provides a 24-hour service to the obstetric unit, and specialist sessions are allocated to the Intensive Care Unit, the Perioperative Service/PreAdmission
Clinic, acute pain rounds, and registrar teaching.
The Tasmanian Medical Retrieval Service is based in Launceston, with the Department of
Anaesthesia contributing to the coordination and medical Escorts for this service. This 24hour service has a specialist designated as Retrieval Coordinator and a registrar or specialist as Medical Escort.
Rostering - Registrars
The night registrar roster incorporates five week nights of in-hospital duty (1800 – 0140 hours) with on-call after 0140 and on-call the preceding weekend. In addition, advanced trainees are rostered for retrieval duty at 1:8. The retrieval registrar is available after-hours on a call-back basis for those days. With six registrars, the night roster is 1:6, and the retrieval roster is about 1:8, making an overall roster of 1:3.5 per year; 120-130 retrievals are performed.
Registrars normally cover absence of colleagues who are on leave, with only one registrar being away at any one time, except in exceptional circumstances, such as a postgraduate course or exam leave. Supervision is according to College Guidelines.
Meetings and Tutorials
A Department meeting is held every Thursday morning from 0730 - 0830, consisting of
Business Meetings, case topic presentations, journal reviews, morbidity and mortality and clinical indicator reviews.
Each week there is a full session allocated to the formal tutorial program.
The Department maintains a comprehensive library of text books with the following journals available: Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia,
Anesthesiology, Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Regional Anaesthesia, International Journal of
Obstetric Anaesthesia, Current Opinion in Anesthesiology
Department videos and CD’s can also be viewed in the Department Library.
The main Hospital Library, (the Sir John Ramsay Memorial Library,) is situated on Level 2 of the Hospital. This has a reference textbook section for anaesthesia, a wide range of journals, and Audio Digest tapes.
Other Teaching
Medical students from the University of Tasmania taking part in their general surgery term attend formal tutorials, informal sessions in the operating theatres and an examination.
An Advanced Airway Management Training program of formal theory and practical instruction is provided for ambulance personnel.
Tutorials are also given to Pharmacy graduates/undergraduates, to theatre nursing staff, and anaesthetists take part in regular pain relief forum sessions conducted by the Antenatal
Midwifery section (currently ceased because of lack of participation).
Leave - Registrars
Annual leave up to five weeks, examination leave for attendance at approved examinations, study leave up to two weeks per year for attendance at an approved course of study or relevant conference for advanced trainees.
DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE:
The Launceston General Hospital is a 316 bed teaching hospital for the University of
Tasmania incorporating the Northern Clinical School and is classified as level Three for
Physician Training for the RACP. The Launceston General Hospital has a previous record of success in preparing candidates for the written and clinical exam for the RACP. The
Department of Medicine offers an exciting program with a high educator to candidates ratio.
There are over 30 FRACP specialists available to conduct formal tutorials and long and short cases. The Department of Medicine has a strong research culture with many physicians conducting independent and clinical trial based research.
All positions participate in an after hours Medical Registrar Roster.
The Royal Australasian College of Physicians conducts clinical examinations with the support of the Department of Medicine annually.
A tutorial program is conducted and clinical long and short cases provided when a candidate has passed the Part 1 Written Examination.
ADVANCED TRAINING POSITIONS:
There are accredited training positions in Cardiology(3 year core training for 2 candidates),
Gastroenterology (part of Victorian match), General Medicine, Haematology/Oncology,
Intensive Care, Nephrology and Respiratory Medicine.

BASIC PHYSICIAN TRAINING POSITIONS:
Positions are available with rotations of three or six months in General Medicine,
Nephrology, Endocrinology, Cardiology/ Stroke Unit, Gastroenterology,
Haematology/Oncology, Intensive Care, Respiratory Medicine, Geriatrics and Rehabilitation and acute medicine. Revised educational curriculum in accordance with RACP guidelines are provided and are based on current health informatics principals.
The Directors of Basic Physician Training at the Launceston General Hospital are Dr Greg
Haug and Dr Kim Rooney who are formally appointed by the Royal Australasian College of
Physicians.
REGISTRARS:
Each registrar will undergo rotation of three or six month in various general medicine and subspecialty areas. Along with a 3 month rotation to a level 2 teaching hospital as part of

DIVISION OF WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S
(Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics)
The Division of Women’s and Children’s Services, Launceston General Hospital offers care to women and children of Northern Tasmania.
The Obstetric Unit delivers 1800 babies per year. Extensive outpatient antenatal services are provided by midwifery and medical staff and programmes include Team midwifery and a
Multidisciplinary Diabetic Obstetric Service. The Unit cares for both high and low risk deliveries, though is unable to offer care to women expected to deliver at less than 30 weeks gestation.
The Busy gynaecology and colposcopy outpatient services are combined with an active surgical program to provide treatment for gynaecological conditions.
The Obstetric and Gynaecology Department is staffed by :
Director
2 Staff Specialists and Visiting Specialist Medical Officers.
3-4 Registrar positions are accredited with the Royal Australian College of
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
2 Registrar positions are part of the basic integrated training programme (1 from the
Tasmanian programme and 1 on rotation from Monash, Melbourne) and another 1-2 positions for Advanced training.
Two Senior RMO/RMO positions are accredited at any one time for the
RANZCOG Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The Unit would like to offer Senior RMO positions for a 6 or 12 month period for candidates keen to obtain the Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Obstetrics or Gynaecology.
These positions would be suitable for RMOs considering a career in obstetrics and gynaecology or who wish to have a good grounding for General Practice obstetrics and gynaecology and General Practice shared care. These positions could be combined with a 6 month rotation to Paediatrics to provide a12 month rotation which would be excellent training for General Practice.
The Paediatric Unit comprises a 30 bed Children’s Ward and a 9 cot Level 2 (plus) neonatal nursery able to offer care to babies greater than 30 weeks gestation, and a paediatric outpatient service. The unit is staffed by 3 staff specialists and a Visiting Specialist; and Subspecialised services also provide a visiting consultative service. There are over 4000 paediatric presentations to the Accident and Emergency Department per year.
The Department of Paediatrics is recognised for specialist training in Paediatrics by the
College of Physicians. Accredited jobs are available for a Senior Registrar and general registrars in Paediatrics. The unit would like to offer a Senior RMO position accredited for the Diploma of Child health and general RMO positions are also available. These positions could be combined with a 6 month rotation in Obstetrics to provide excellent training for
General Practice.
