Friends of the Royal Naval Museum and HMS Victory 2015 FRNM EVENTS PROGRAMME We look forward to welcoming Friends and their guests to our 2015 events. Please note that these events can only be booked by current members of the Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and HMS Victory. EXPLOSION – THE MUSEUM OF NAVAL FIREPOWER AND FORT BROCKHURST TUESDAY 7th JULY All-day visit to two heritage attractions in Gosport : Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower and Fort Brockhurst. These are in the care of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and English Heritage respectively. Each visit will include a curatorial presentation and a tour, with plenty of time to admire the actual buildings as well as view their artefact collections : Naval weapons ‘from small arms to a nuclear bomb’ at Explosion and at Fort Brockhurst items relating to the Fort itself, plus ‘a treasure trove’ of objects and works of art discovered and excavated by EH from across the whole of Southern England. Lunch will provided at Explosion. INTERNATIONAL BOATBUILDING TRAINING COLLEGE – HISTORIC DOCKYARD WEDNESDAY 7th OCTOBER An afternoon talk and tour of the new International Boatbuilding Training College in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. By the time of our visit the College’s courses in traditional wooden boatbuilding will be fully operational, having moved into the re-furbished Boathouse 4, along with their Small Naval Vessel Collection. ‘ART AND WAR AT SEA’ ROYAL MARITIME CLUB PORTSMOUTH AND HMS NELSON SATURDAY 7th NOVEMBER A major authoritative book ‘Art and the War at Sea’ is due to be published by the National Maritime Museum later this year and there will be a linking FRNM event at the Royal Maritime Club in Portsmouth (B&B available). As well as a local speaker there will be contributions from NMM art curators. The day will focus especially on William Wyllie - his contribution to maritime art, his life in Portsmouth and why his ‘star is perhaps not yet fully risen’. At the end of the day there will be a visit to HMS Nelson, a short walk from the RMC, where we will have the privilege of having tea in the splendid setting of the Wardroom, while we view paintings by Wyllie and other maritime artists. BEN AINSLIE RACING – AMERICA’S CUP HQ WEDNESDAY 25TH NOVEMBER PORTSMOUTH A morning visit to Ben Ainslie Racing’s America’s Cup Base on the Camber in Old Portsmouth. Due for completion in May, it will house all the design, training and sponsor facilities, as well as berthing the yachts being prepared and trialled for the preliminary racing regattas prior to the final cup series in Bermuda.
