To develop 21st Century skills, it is imperative that students develop a mindset that enables them to take on challenges and value efforts. We can help students how not to be deterred by setbacks but to be resilient. Read about the Growth Mindset (“The Effort Effect,” March/April 2007) and download an article by Carol Dweck in ASCD’s Educational Leadership September 2010: www.ascd.org/publications/.../sept10/.../Even-Geniuses-Work-Hard.aspx Why Growth Mindset? Workshop Details World-renowned Stanford university professor, Dr Carol Dwek, and her team, in decades of research on achievement and success, have made a ground breaking discovery about the power of our mindset. When students have a growth mindset, they enjoy a heightened sense of confidence and competence, demonstrate significant improvement in their grades, and become motivated, self-regulated learners. Directly related to this, Professor Edward L Deci, University of Rochester, and colleagues have identified three keys that drive human motivation beyond the traditional carrot-and-stick approach, that have tremendous implications for the ways teachers motivate students and ignite their passion for learning. Objective This workshop introduces participants to mindset theories and their applications to classroom practice. Participants will also learn and share how they can move students along the extrinsicintrinsic motivation continuum based on the Self-Determination theory. For whom?
