Why:
The hospital was founded as a sanctuary for cats and the smaller, generally
more timid exotic pets, to receive healthcare and boarding without the
added stress and noise that accompanies clinics that also service dogs.
When:
As the areas first cat and exotic exclusive hospital in the Central Coast, the
doors were opened on June 21st, 2004.
Where:
565 Five Cities Drive, Pismo Beach (the Pismo Coast Plaza, just south of
the Outlets)
How:
The clinic was founded as a culmination of ideas and techniques both new
and from the many practices where Dr. Conn performed relief services in
order to better care for the cherished family cat, bird, reptile and small
mammal.
What:

Our goal is to provide the most stress-free scenario possible to expedite
advanced medical and preventative healthcare.
Who:
Dr. Maxwell Conn has been a resident of the Central Coast since January
of 2000. He graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of
Veterinary Medicine (Virginia Tech) in 1997. After doing externships at
the Baltimore Zoo, Baltimore Aquarium, and Midwest exotics clinic in
Chicago, he has remained active in the dog, cat, and exotics communities.
He lectures at the local university to promote exotic pet wellbeing
through proper care, and has been published in Exotic DVM on several
occasions. He participates in on-line forums with veterinarians from
around the world, and he belongs to the Association of Avian
Veterinarians, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians.
2). Benefit to the client:
The limitation of species seen allows additional resources and time to be devoted to the
special needs of cats, birds, reptiles, and small mammals. These include premier cat
boarding facilities, with adjoining cage options to allow for additional space (vertical or
horizontal), separate distinct areas for litter boxes, and heated cage floors (for recovery).
In-house lab services that include full blood chemistry and complete blood count panels
performed on the same day. Advanced diagnostics with rigid endoscopy which is
especially useful for minimally-invasive surgery and diagnosis on smaller patients. A
full-line of specialized instrumentation for prophalactic and therapeutic small mammal
dentistry. Feline dentistry performed with cutting edge technology (Im3 air-driven high
speed equipment). A “hot-room” with controlled temperature and humidity for the
intensive care needs of ill pets (very suitable for small exotic species).
We take your pets anesthesia seriously and reduce risks by offering maximum support
through monitoring technology (electrocardiograms, pulse oximetry, esophageal
stethoscope, and dopler/blood pressure), supplemental heat (forced warm air via our Bair
Hugger heat pillows), fluids, and the industries safest anesthetic regimens and analgesics
(pain control). This is NOT assembly-line medicine, and we expect our patients to
recover smoother, more safely, and comfortably then they would without this attention to
detail.
