SUBJECTS THAT EMBED IT CORE SKILL
The following information is extracted from SQA documentation on where the IT
core skill is assessed as part of the assessment for a specialist subject. The
information relates only to National Qualifications for Higher Still and does not
include Standard Grade or other units in the SQA framework that also deliver this.
Neither does it list dedicated and free-standing units that do so.
Centres are advised to check the current position for any particular core skill or
subject in the SQA publication Automatic Certification of Core Skills in National
Qualifications 1999/2000 or subsequent editions. The information below may be true
for only some levels in a subject. Again, the advice is to check the position in the
SQA publication.

HIGHER STILL COURSES THAT WILL PROVIDE ADVICE FOR SUBJECT
SPECIALISTS ON COMBINING IT WITH THE SUBJECT
Subject specialists have identified appropriate contexts in which the following
subjects can combine teaching and assessing the core skill IT with the subject in ways
which are meaningful and relevant to students and would demand little in terms of
additional workload for many departments. It is for senior managers, however, to
establish whether individual departments have the expertise and resources to deliver
the core skill within their centres.
Advice will be based on the general documents found in this pack, but be detailed and
fully contextualised. In some cases the advice will be how to raise the level of
attainment to the same level as that of the subject assessment. In others it will be to
introduce the core skill. There are various means of achieving this, the main being to
produce a plan or a report. Other options are, however, possible and have been
applied if they better relate to the main learning activities of the subject.
