Project Title Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Students
Project Summary (Maximum 300 characters) Project descriptions will be posted on the
Web and disseminated.
The Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Students will provide 2nd, 3rd and 4th
teachers with collaboration time to analyze student work from classroom assessment based
on standards to refine assessment and align the assessments to the learning targets. These
assessments will be shared with the Learning Team and the Mathematics Committee. In
order to enhance mathematical content knowledge the Mathematics Committee will share
ideas from “Teaching Mathematics through Problem Solving” strategies with the staff.
Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Students
Outcomes:
Classroom Teachers:
Classroom teachers in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade met a total of 3 hours to:
 Align Investigations in Number, Data and Space to the Learning Targets and State
Descriptors.
 Develop a curriculum that is consistent across the grade levels to address the
mathematical concepts that are not covered in Investiagations.
 Some grade levels started to refine their classroom assessments based on standards
to accurately support grade level learning targets.
 A comprehensive mathematical vocabulary list has been complied to insure that all
students understand the same mathematical terms.
Learning Team Data Analysis Meetings:
The learning Team met on a weekly basis to analyze test data, and monitor assessments
outlined in the Education Plan. Extra Learning Team Meetings were scheduled to:
 Identify skills that are not addressed in our board adopted text, Investigations In
Numbers, Data and Space.
 Develop a common Classroom Based Assessment form to give students an
opportunity to gain test experience in a variety of skills and test formats.
 To analyze grade level classroom assessment based on standards to insure that they
are aligned with the WKCE and Terra Nova Mathematics Rubrics.
Mathematics Committee Meetings:
The mathematics committee met in March, April and May to share the classroom based
assessments based on standards and strategies developed teachers participating in The
Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Students grant. The Mathematics Committee
jig-sawed and gave a brief overview of the following chapter in “Teaching Mathematics
Through Problem Solving”:
 “How to Focus the Mathematics Curriculum on Solving Problems”
 “Supporting Second-Language Learners in the Mathematics Classroom”
 “Addressing the Needs of Exceptional Students through Problem Solving”
Information from the book discussion were shared with the staff via e-mail.
Evaluation:
In order evaluate the Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Students objectives:
 The Investigations Alignment to the Learning Targets and State Descriptors were
handed in and are in the process of being typed and shared with other grade levels.
 Teachers provided samples the revised Classroom Based Assessments that they
started to work on.
 Teachers reflected on best practices outlined in “Teaching Mathematics through
Problem Solving” at the Maximizing Mathematics For Teachers and Student
collaboration meetings and at Mathematics Committee meetings.
 The Learning Team started to analyze grade level classroom assessments based on
standards to ensure that they are aligned with the WKCE and Terra Nova
Mathematics Rubrics.
 A common Classroom Based Assessment form is being developed and upon
completion will be given to the staff for approval.
