Dear Prospective Nursing Student:
Thank you for your interest in the new Accelerated Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Program, offered by the
Department of Nursing. The California Board of Registered Nursing has officially approved the Second Degree
Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Program, and students are actively enrolled in our first two learning teams. A third
learning team of 36 will begin study in the fall of 2005. We will be accepting applications for the fall of 2005 up until
the application deadline of April 1, 2005.
If you have thought about becoming a nurse but didn’t want to spend many years in school, or have had difficulty
gaining admission into one of the many impacted nursing programs, this full-time accelerated degree program is
designed for you. This BSN program will prepare you to enter the nursing field as a generalist practitioner with the
knowledge and skills necessary to practice nursing in any setting. The accelerated BSN program is specifically
designed for individuals with degrees in other fields who would now like to enter the nursing profession. This 60-week,
full time, fully accredited academic program will prepare you to take the National Council Licensing Examination
(NCLEX) and to apply for a State of California Public Health Certificate.
You will learn to accurately assess the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health status of human beings
across various cultural and age groups. Clinical decision making techniques, as well as a variety of other key concepts
and applicable skills will be covered, giving you a thorough and well-rounded education in the field of nursing. The
program utilizes technology as well as a cohort group format to enhance your learning experience. Convenience,
accredited instructors, and quality curriculum are additional keys to the success of this program combining to bring you
closer to your goal of a rewarding career in nursing.
For your information the following materials are enclosed: (1) an Overview of the BSN Program (2) an Admissions
Worksheet (3) a Sample Program Schedule and, (4) a Department of Nursing Application form. It is important to
recognize that all applicants must apply to both the University (using the official CSULB Application form which may
be downloaded from the CSULB website) and, the Department of Nursing (using the Accelerated Program Application
form), and must meet all the criteria for admission in both areas. Specifics will be outlined in the Admissions
Worksheet enclosed.
The demand for qualified nurses has reached staggering proportions in this country. To answer that need, the
University and the Department of Nursing have developed this accelerated BSN degree program – and it is with great
pleasure and excitement that we are able to offer it to you, now. If you would like to be considered for admission
please carefully review the enclosed materials, and prepare the necessary documents. We are currently accepting
applications for our fall 2005 cohort group.

*This program is a full- time, 60 week (15 month) program.
Program Admission Requirements:
 Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A degree in any field is acceptable, especially those in the health related
areas.
 Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better.
 All pre-requisite course grades must be C or higher (a grade of C- will not be accepted). Course work must have been
completed within the past 10 years.
 Take the Critical Thinking Test. Pre-register in the Department of Nursing. There is a $30.00 charge for the test. This test can
be taken only once, no matter how many times you apply to the program.
 A personal interview may be requested of all applicants.
 Apply to California State University, Long Beach.
 Apply to the Department of Nursing. This is a separate application procedure from your admission to the University.
Application and Acceptance Deadlines:
The Nursing program uses a “competitive admissions process” - they will be accepting applications for the fall of 2005, up until the
application deadline of April 1, 2005. Once all of the applications have been submitted, they will be reviewed as a group. In early
June, letters of acceptance will be mailed out to the appropriate candidates. Students will have 30 days to respond back to the Nursing
Department confirming their acceptance into the program. A wait list will also be developed – students placed on the wait list will be
notified of their status mid June. If they then become eligible for formal acceptance into the program, the Nursing Department will
notify them directly.
Graduation Requirements:




Complete the CSULB Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE)
Complete any prerequisite courses
Complete the CORE nursing program.
Depending on total unit acceptance by the University, students may need to complete a limited number of GE requirements for a
second Baccalaureate Degree to be awarded.

The capstone course of the CSULB-Accelerated BSN program allows for specialization in Maternal-Child Health, Community Mental
Health, Critical Care, or Rural Health.
Some upper division general education courses may be required to meet the graduation requirements. This is dependent upon the
courses completed in the first degree program. These requirements will be determined after the student enters the nursing courses.
