Presentation by Mrs Carmel McCartan
Principal, St Louise’s Comprehensive College, a Specialist
College. Carmel is currently Chair of the Area Learning
Community and was the Vice Chair of the Catholic
Principals’ Association for several years. She is a member
of the Specialist Schools Principals Steering Group and the
Steering Group for Outstanding Teacher Programme. She
also works with RTU on the PQH programme.

IFUW Aim 1: to ensure that girls and women have the right and access to education
up to the highest levels in order to achieve their full potential and participate as equal
and independent members of society.

Presentation by Dr Claire Rush
Participation and Advocacy Co-ordinator for the Girls’
Brigade, whose mission is to see the lives of girls and
communities transformed here and overseas. Claire
completed her PhD in Gender History at Queen’s University
in 2010.
“The Illusion of equality? Women and girls in
contemporary culture”.
A dynamic exploration of the hidden messages about
femininity which are being transmitted through contemporary
culture and its effect on women and girls.
IFUW Aim 2: to ensure that girls and women are empowered through education and
training to represent and be heard at all levels of decision making worldwide and to
enable young women to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Deputy Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern
Ireland.
“ Visible women and the glass ceiling: a personal
journey.”
Appointed Deputy Chief Constable in 2009, Judith is
passionate about making sure that policing makes a real and
meaningful difference in those areas that matter most, helping
vulnerable victims and ensuring others realise their full
potential. She has responsibility amongst many other things
for the PSNI’s Diversity Strategy and Gender Action Plan.
