Mission Statement:
Putnam Science Academy strives to develop young men who are committed to
academic excellence, with particular emphasis on math and science, as well as to nurture
engaged and effective citizens of a democratic world. By providing a challenging, culturally
diverse environment both in the classroom and in the residential life community, our goal is
to soundly prepare students for acceptance into quality colleges and universities across the
United States and to foster their future success in the world beyond.
Community and School Information
Putnam Science Academy (PSA) is a private boys' boarding school, established in 2002,
offering a comprehensive college preparatory program focusing on science, mathematics,
and technology. PSA is a small structured school delivering a rigorous, innovative
educational program. Located in a beautiful large campus area in Putnam, CT. Putnam
Science Academy is an international boys’ boarding high school (9th through 12th grades)
with 122 students from many states and countries (63 international and 59 domestic).
Although it is a science academy, PSA has a focus on rigor in all areas from math to social
studies, which makes PSA above other schools. PSA offers level based classes and three
different high school diplomas: General, College Prep, and Honors College Prep. All have
different graduation requirements.
Curriculum
Putnam Science Academy has a curriculum designed to meet the needs of all students
with an emphasis on rigor and college readiness. Students enjoy a warm, friendly and safe
academic environment where they are challenged both academically and through the arts.
PSA has been preparing its students for the best colleges in the United States. PSA is also
known as a school preparing its students for state- and nation-wide science events, which
help students in getting accepted to top level colleges. The school is improving its AP
Program as a result of an increased student interest. This year, 8 different AP Classes
are offered in Biology, Government, Human Geography, US History, Calculus AB,
Calculus BC, Chemistry, and English Language and Composition. Under the current
scheduling restrictions, Seniors can take a maximum of 4 AP classes. Juniors can take
a maximum of three and Sophomores can only take two AP classes. Honors classes are
offered in English I, II, III, IV, Algebra I, II, Geometry, Probability and Statistics, Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, US History, World History Spanish-I, II, III. Students are offered two
choices for Foreign Language courses: Spanish and Turkish.
Since 2008, the students who were not yet proficient in English have attended
Intensive English Language Institute of Worcester State University housed within PSA
campus prior to being accepted in regular classes. Mornings were spent in intensive English
instruction in all skill areas such as: Listening, Speaking, Grammar, Reading, and Writing.
In order to improve English fluency, students gave well researched presentations within
and outside the school and practiced for standardized tests like TOEFL. There are also ESL
support courses available for international students in upper classes.
Graduation Requirements
PSA offers three different diplomas as Honors College Prep Diploma, College Prep
Diploma, and a General High School Diploma. Each Diploma has different graduation
requirements, which are mentioned on the last page of this profile. PSA does not rank due
to a small class size. However, we determine only Valedictorian and Salutatorian by using
cumulative weighted GPA of students. Weighted GPA is not reported in student transcripts
but only calculated internally by using the following coefficients:
AP Course Coefficient: 1.3325
Honor Course Coefficient: 1.2500
College Prep Course Coefficient: 1.0825
Unweighted Course Coefficient: 1.0000
