Short Description of the organisation
“Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute” (BDUTAE) has a total of 1080 ha area where
crop and animal research are carried out, and seeds of varieties improved by the institute are multiplied.
The Institute carries out research on different areas collaboration with national institutes of Ministry of
Agriculture, universities such as Selçuk, Sabancı and Çukurova Universities, and international institutes or
organizations such as CIMMYT and ICARDA. In this respect, some important projects for Central Anatolia Region are
handled which funded by public budget through some government organizations like TUBITAK and DPT. The
International Winter Wheat Improvement Program (IWWIP), which have been coordinated by the Turkish National
Research Program, CIMMYT and ICARDA. IWWIP has aimed to develop winter wheat germplasm and varieties
which have broad adaptation, disease resistant, high yield for developing countries with an emphasis on West Asia and
North Africa (WANA) and the Central Asian and Caucasian Republics. IWWIP has also sought to facilitate the
exchange of germplasm among the winter wheat programs of the world.
Originally, two institutes were responsible for cereals and animal research. However, the responsibility of new
institute was extended. For the moment, the subject areas of BDUTAE are as follows:
1-Winter cereals (Wheat, Triticale, Barley, Oat, Rye); Maize; Forage crops and pastures; Industrial crops; Cattle
breeding and husbandry; Sheep breeding and husbandry.
So far, eight Bread wheat cultivars (Dağdaş 94 and Karahan 99; Kınacı 97 and Göksu 99, Bağcı 2002, Konya
2002, Ekiz, Ahmetağa), two Durum wheat cultivars (Selçuklu 97, Meram 2002), Five Barley cultivars (Karatay 94 for
rainfed, Kıral 97 and Larende for irrigated areas. Beyşehir and Konevi were released for favorable environmental
conditions), Two Oat cultivars (Seydişehir and Faikbey), One Rye cultivar (Aslım 94 for rainfed and problem areas)
and three Triticale cultivars (Tatlıcak97 and Melez 2001, Mikham 2002) have been released. In average, 500-600 ton
original seeds are produced annually and distributed to farmers and State farms (TİGEM).
In the 14 years, relationship between plant nutrients (macro and micro) and plant varieties were tested. Most of
the emphasis is given on particularly zinc. The results of collaborative research carried by BDUTAE and Anatolian
Agricultural Research Institute between 1993 and 1997 showed that zinc deficiency was a common problem in Central
Anatolia. Response of varieties or species to zinc deficiency was significantly different. The fertilizers with zinc have
caused significant yield increase and lessened harmful effects of the other factors such as drought and root diseases and
so on. In addition to these effects, the zinc contents of the crops have increased by zinc fertilization. As a contribution
of this research, zinc fertilizers and fertilizers with zinc have started to be appeared on Turkish agricultural market.
Findings of research related to soil management, variety selection, sowing methods, crop rotation and cultivation
techniques are transferred to related interest groups by extension service.
“Anatolia Brown Swiss Cattle Project “, started in 2004, is conducted at BDUTAE and it is one of the research which
have priority in Turkey. Konya Merinos and Güney Karaman are local sheep breeds in the region. Four genotypes of
meat type sheep has improved at our institute by the work conducted in the last 10 years. At the moment, there is a
project to adapt two of these four genotypes to farmers’ condition in Konya and Afyon provinces.
