Message from the President
Summer is here and I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather. We had a good year as sisters – friendship,
conversation, scholarship - but truth be told, our ranks are dwindling. We did not even have 30 dues paying members
this year! Despite that, we still managed to raise $1000 with our flower sale and, when added to a $2,000 draw from our
scholarship fund (bequests from Fran Cooper and Beryl Haas), we were able to award two $1,500 scholarships. This is the
60th year we have awarded scholarships.
My point is, the burden of keeping this organization running is falling on fewer and fewer people. Clearly, some move
away or become unable to attend. But others have drifted away…and are still in the area. I would like to invite those of
you in the latter category to please come to a meeting or two, pay your dues (only $32; $20 goes to national, $3 to Panhel
and we keep the remaining $9), help us up with interesting program ideas and even better, recruit new members! I know
everyone is busy but please find a little time for Tri Delta. You won’t be disappointed!
Betsy Rice
Colgate University was named the most beautiful in the country, reported on TV, but I don’t know by whom or
what!
Dick Howell had a cancerous bladder removed, as well as other surgery. Ginger stays with him each day. I
spell her occasionally so she can have a few hours to herself. Dick is not in pain and is in a surprisingly good
mood. See Obituary on page 3.
Julie Moore’s husband, Richard, died a month ago in New Mexico.
Evie Parsons had a recent breast cancer diagnosis. Chemotherapy will commence on 9/4 and will consist of 4
sessions three weeks apart. Then she will undergo radiation and hormone therapy.
Carol McMillen has been diagnosed with lymphoma, now in remission. We hope that the remission lasts a
long, long time.
Directory Updates: Please send any new or changed information for our 2014-15 yearbook to Karrie
Argiropoulos at yumca4@hotmail.com or 582-6170 She needs it NOW! We have a new member coming
to Potluck Supper, Erika Murphy, lives in Victor/Farmington area and graduated from Allegheny College. My
suggestions to her were not to bring a dessert since we always have too many.

Potluck Supper, Tuesday, Sept. 16, 6.00 p.m.
Potluck Supper will be held on Tuesday, September 16, at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Bette Thomas, 28
Mayflower Drive (near Highland Avenue -- 244-2012) It’s always a great beginning to our year. Cohostesses are Sue Ramsdell, Karrie A and Joan Keyser. I may have one wrong name. Sorry.
October 18 meeting—Saturday afternoon at 2:00
October meeting at Betsy’s new apartment at Valley Manor, #112. Park in the west parking lot
(toward downtown; not near Wegman’s). [The main large parking lot is usually full.] Walk on the
walkway around the building to the front door and enter there. My unit is on the first floor.
The time has been changed to Saturday afternoon, October 18, at 2:00. We are trying something
new in order to include more of our younger members – and also those who do not like night driving.
Valley Manor is at 1570 East Avenue (next to the very tall brick building at 1600). It is near the traffic
light where Park Avenue dead ends into East Avenue. I will love showing off my new large apartment.
Panhel Reminder We hope many of you will try the Tour the World event held at Shadow Lake Golf
Club in Penfield on Friday, November 7, at 6:00. Admission includes gourmet food, raffle prizes, and
silent and live auctions. This is the fourth year that Panhel has sponsored this event, and last April
was able to give out six $2,500 scholarships!!! Admission is $50 per person. It’s a fun, busy evening
– for a good cause. Contact Karrie A (545-4903) for more information.
Founders’ Day dinner will be held on Thursday evening, November 13, at 5:30 p.m. at The Highlands
(200 Hahnemann Trail, Pittsford).
Website we are in need of someone to bring our website up to date. Krystle Williams set it up
several years ago. She added the newsletters and minutes as they became available. Photos were
added as taken. Please call Betsy Rice (473-9363) to volunteer.
Calling/e-mail chair: Joan Keyser has asked to be replaced as our calling/e-mail chair. She has been
doing it for several years. I believe our new member Erika Murphy has volunteered.
Founders’ Day dinner will be held on Thursday evening, November 13, at 5:30 p.m. at The Highlands
(200 Hahnemann Trail, Pittsford).

Dick Howell dies August 27-- Obituary below:
Pittsford: August 27, 2014. Predeceased by his son, Todd and survived by his wife of 61
years, Ginger, daughter, Holly, son Dean (Raven) and grandsons Maris and Jake. Born and
raised in Michigan, Dick graduated with an MS in chemistry from the University of Michigan
where he was a Phi Gamma Delta, married the girl next door and moved to Rochester when
he was hired by Eastman Kodak. A natural athlete, Dick won several golf tournaments and
had a brief encounter with a scratch handicap. Several tennis trophies gather dust in the
closet. An outstanding swimmer, he held a national high school record in the individual
medley. So it was something of a surprise when he never really got the hang of skiing, but he
persevered to "make Rochester winters bearable". He was devoted to books, amassing
rooms full and sometimes buying the same book twice. Dick retired from Kodak and joined
Ginger in the Seasonal Kitchen Cooking School where he sliced and diced with alacrity and
was a constant source of humor prompting someone to call it "The Dick and Ginger Show".
He did some professional modeling, playing a doctor, CEO, symphony conductor and father
of the bride on General Hospital, but his best real life roles were proud Dad and loving
Grandpa.Dick did not want a fancy goodbye. He will join his son, Todd, on a Cape Cod dune
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Friends are invited to toast a great guy at Casa Larga
Vineyards in Fairport on Thursday, September 18th from 1pm to 3pm. To share a memory of
Richard or send a condolence to the family visit www.anthonychapels.com. - See more at:

Landmark Society “Inside Downtown” Tour – September 12 and 13
I have attended this tour several years in the past and it is unbelievably interesting. This year the
office and apartment in the Temple Building of Dr. Michael Lewis will he shown. He has always been
my hero since he didn’t leave the building when hordes of others did . Quoting the D&C, “Dentist
Michael Lewis has his office in the Temple Building and rents a loft apartment there as well. Call it
the opposite of a lake home. His primary home, which he shares with his wife (our own Peggy SmithLewis) and children, is in Mendon, but the Lewises enjoy weekend getaways in the heart of the city.
“Working in the Temple Building with a skyline of the city is indeed inspiring, he says, pointing
to the view of St. Joseph’s Park. ‘On a clear day, you can see Lake Ontario.’
“Lewis, 68 has had his practice in the Temple Building for four decades, long before urban
renewal became hip. He resisted following the pack of businesses moving from downtown. . . .
because he liked working in the urban center.”
