1. Utilise an approach to one-to-one and group tutoring, which acknowledges learners’ independence and

2. Respect personal and cultural values of learners and other centre members.
3. Always respect learner confidentiality.
4. Facilitate opportunities for learners to develop links and a sense of belonging with the wider community.
5. Inform learners as is appropriate, about the Treaty of Waitangi, the status of tangata whenua, and their
partnership with tangata tiriti (people whose authority to belong is derived from the Treaty).
6. Refer matters outside areas of expertise to appropriately qualified people.
7. Monitor and evaluate activities to inform planning.
8. Adhere to centre mission, objectives, policies and procedures.

Job Description: Volunteer and Programme Coordinator
6 Month Fixed Term Position
Responsible to: Manager, English Language Partners Christchurch
Occasional weekend or evening work will be required. Hours: 25 per week.
The Coordinator’s role may include, but not be limited to, the following tasks:
1-1 Home Tutor programme
1. Provide learner support



Interview and assess learners for home and / or group tutoring.
Match learners with appropriate tutors.
Refer learners to other providers when appropriate.
2. Train home tutors to meet learners’ needs


Recruit, interview and train volunteers for home tutoring.
Assess tutors for their Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring.
3. Support tutors working with learners


Support with resources and ongoing training / workshops / information dissemination.
Maintain personal contact with tutors.
4. Administration



Maintain tutor and learner records.
Prepare written reports as required.
Liaise with National Association Office, other ESOL schemes, local community groups, other ethnic
and migrant groups and their support groups.
5. Specific Responsibilities


Oversee maintenance up to date and accessible library resources.
Manage the 1-1 Home Tutor Volunteer Programme
Assist with programme coordination (locally funded evening classes)









Coordinate classes, including venue, teachers, and learners
Ensure that programme is run to standards set by National office guidelines
Liaise with National office, other ESOL providers, community groups
Communicate regularly with teachers and solve any issues as they arise
Promote the programme as needed
Interview and assess learners
Prepare written reports as required
Collect fees at the beginning of each term
Use the database to organise classes
Person Specification
The Volunteer and Programme Coordinator will have:
Qualifications


Diploma or Certificate in TESOL or TEFL
Diploma or Certificate in Teaching or Volunteer Management

Demonstrated oral and written skills
Adult teaching experience
Supervising skills
Experience and competence as an ESOL teacher or Home Tutor
Experience working with volunteers
