Notes for CLIFFORD JESSE FAWN:
Enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 4, 1942. USAAF serial# 15076739.
Assigned to 33rd Troop Carrier Squadron of the 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. 5th
Air Force. Shot down in C-47 #I-386658 (1941 model #41-38658) by Japanese
Zeroes near airfield at Wau, Papua, New Guinea. Wreckage discovered in October
1988 by Grant Malensek, a Canadian geologist with Australian mining company
CRA Explorations. The aircraft was one of 3 planes on a routine combat flight from
Jackson Airdrome near Port Moresby, New Guinea to Wau airdrome, New Guinea.
About 1045 hours on 6 Feb. 1943, the flight was circling Wau when it was attacked
by enemy aircraft. Two of the US aircraft succeeded in getting away and returned to
Jackson Airdrome. This aircraft, #41-38658, was last seen by other members of the
flight heading into the mountains near Wau. The aircraft was reported to be under
control when last seen and there was no evidence that it was damaged or that any of
the crew was injured.
CLIFFORD JESSE 'BUD' FAWN and the STORY OF HIS GHOST are told in the
"notes" of GLADYS MAE FAWN included in this report.
Eyewitness accounts to the downing of his plane follow:
Subject: Feburary 6,1943
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 20:06:51 -0600
From: adamsi
To: "Donald R. Fawn"
It was a beautiful day for flying-scattered to broken clouds, the cumulous starting to
build up about ten oclock and they build rather rapidly in this part of the world.
Visibility was very good as the three 33rd aircraft winged along in loose formation
with their war cargo and passengers. Lt. Wamsley with troops and ammo for the
fight we were reinforcing, Lt Schwenson on his left wing with another five thousand
pounds of ammo and equipment for the fight, and S/sgt Adams on the right wing
with an Australian Brigadair his Staff and another five thousand pounds of
Australian Army Biscuit to feed the hungry men on the ground. The weather had
been bad for flying for the last few days and they need resupply quite badly. The fact
is they needed reinforcments and lots of them. Wau airfield is on the side of a
mountain and has about a twenty degree slope. The Japs had pushed to the lower end
of the runway in their drive to take the area. We arrived over Wau at exactly 10.30
am and immediately started procedures for landing.Unknown to us, a force of Jap
fighters and bombers han flown in above us and were starting to bomb the field. The
first warning I had of things gone wrong was big chuncks of the runway getting
airborne underneath me and the Australian anti-aircraft fire comming thru our
formation fireing at the Japanese just above us.Lt.Wamsley dived to the right and
down for the riverbed I thought, Lt Schwenson started down and to the right, I
figured he would do the same thing.I broke left and back into a large cloud we had
just passed under. I saw our fighters shoot down one Jap fighter coming after us and
then got very busy trying to get out of the fight without getting my wings singed. It
took a lot longer to write this than it did to happen. I made my way back down the
valley to the south east and back to Moresby where the Bridgadair ask me why we
had come back to Port Moresby instead of landing at Wau. I hope he found out why
some way because that was just idle chatter to me at that moment. I had laundry to
take care of. (signed, Ira Adams)
Another story concerning the crash of this aricraft:
Your E mail came thre (sic) regarding Jesse "Bud" Fawn, 33rd Troop Carrier
Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group. I was a member of this squadron when it was
activated at Florence, South Carolina in 1942. I was a pilot of one of the aircraft that
flew the Pacific and in New Guinea as well. I was familiar with most of the aircraft
crews as we had 13 aircraft in the squadron when when we departed Hamilton Field
in California (just across the bay fron San Fran). I was flying the same day to Wau
on the day of this incident. This aircraft was not in the flight that I was in, as we
usually flew three aircraft to a flight. I recall members stating that he turned left
leaving the Wau airstrip (a very steep grass airstrip from one end to the other) the
steepest airstrip I ever encountered in my 30 years with the Air Force. If you would
turn left after departure, you would head down the Wau valley and toward Bulolo (a
gold mining area on the river). One would find it very difficult to reverse course once
you were in the valley because it was quite narrow at the lower elevation. At this
time, this territory was under the control of the Japanese. On our departure we would
turn right and climb until we were at the top of the mountains and skip along the top
until we could descend to the ocean level and return to Port Moresby.
Fawn may have flown with me as a crew member on some of the flights, but I do not
recall any specifics as often we would have different crew members.
You mentioned the book "American Flyboy." This book I have in my possession, as
it was written by George Wamsley, who later became Squadron Commander as did I
in the course of the three years flying in New Guinea. George is a very personal
friend and I am going to give you his address:

I would be extremely interested to see what you have on the Perkins line from
Licking Co., OH. My grandfather, John J. Perkins, was born in Croton, Licking Co.,
OH in 1916, and died in Mt. Vernon, OH. I know there are other Perkins' in Mt.
Vernon, OH and the Perkins you have may not be the same line as mine,
