Authors: Surname in capitals, followed by a comma, followed by a space, First name (S) Capital letter first letter and the rest lower case. e.g. SMITH, John L Where an author has only two initials after the surname place a full stop after each initial and a space between the two initials. e.g. SMITH, J. L. 2. Editors, illustrators and compilers: After author entry as above add (ED.) (ILLUS.) or (COMP.) e.g. SMITH, J. (ED.) 3. Personal titles: e.g. SMITH, P. (DR.) Subjects: Names - After a comma all capitals and after a dash capitalize first letter of next word e.g. ABBOTT, LANA – Biography ART, ABORIGINAL ABBREVIATIONS – Dictionaries Town or region - add state (in Australia) e.g. ABORIGINAL PEOPLES – Western District (Vic.) Art and Sport biographies: Catalogue in the appropriate number in the 700’s with .092 added Music biographies also to be catalogued in the appropriate 700 numbers but add country code not 092 e.g. John Farnham = 781.660994 FAR NOT 781.660994092 FAR or 781.66092 FAR Call number letters should reflect the subject of the biography e.g. Paul Keating, Prime Minister = 923.2 KEA Racial, ethnic and national groups: Put in 920.0092 if a collection of general biographies of aboriginal peoples. If specific. i.e Aboriginal politicians put in 923.2 if a single biography or a collection of aboriginal politicians. FICTION CATALOGUING Use fiction subject list in the front of the SCIS subject headings book and add new headings as required; use existing non-fiction headings and add – Fiction as necessary to allow continuity of cataloguing. Put first four letters of the authors surname as call number. o If a book has more than one title to add extra titles in Alice after the main entry title they must be added as SUBJECTS in lower case with normal capitalization. After the title add (Title). FICTION SUBJECT HEADINGS: o Ensure that the book is a fiction o Subject headings will reflect headings used for non-fiction and will have – Fiction added to them. o CLASSICS – use for stories that are classics e.g. Old Yeller, Alice in wonderland, War of the worlds etc. o CLASSICAL LITERATURE – use this heading for Bronte, Dickens, Hardy etc. o Add – AUSTRALIAN FICTION to all books written by Australian authors o AUTHORS, AUSTRALIAN - Add to all books written Australian authors All call numbers will now have the first four letters of the authors surname (This reflects local public library practice) o o o If the book has been made into a film or a television series add: o MOTION PICTURES – Fiction o TELEVISION PROGRAMMES - Fiction Headings we are not using: o Adult fiction o Detective stories use DETECTIVES - Fiction or CRIME STORIES o Dog stories use DOGS – Fiction o Easy read use QUICK READ – Fiction (For thin, easy to read books) o GRAPHIC TEXTS use only for Non-Fiction (use GRAPHIC NOVELS for Fiction) o Growing up – Fiction use ADOLESCENTS - Fiction; FRIENDSHIP - Fiction; FAMILY RELATIONS - Fiction; or some other appropriate heading to the storyline. o Love stories – use ROMANCES – Fiction and please use as a last resort. o Picture books – use PICTURE STORY BOOKS o Suspense stories use MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE STORIES.
