WFP EXPECTS UP TO 10 MILLION WILL REQUIRE FOOD
ASSISTANCE IN DROUGHT-STRICKEN HORN OF AFRICA
WFP Spokesman, David Orr, on his return from Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya this week:
“I met Somali women and children who had walked for weeks to reach the
safety of refugee camps in Kenya. They were exhausted, in poor health, and the
children were severely malnourished. Drought combined with conflict, and
rising food prices is forcing millions into hunger and WFP is providing a
lifeline.”
WFP Spokeswoman, Judith Schuler, on the situation in Dolo Ado refugee camp, southern
Ethiopia this week:
“The numbers of Somali women and children seeking refuge in Ethiopia is on
the rise. I spoke to mothers who told me they were coming here because the
drought had devastated crops and livestock and they were unable to find the
food they needed to keep their children healthy.”
WFP Horn of Africa response:

WFP is providing food assistance to around 6 million people in Ethiopia,
Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti and eastern Uganda, but as the impact of the
drought grows, we expect this number will rise to as much as 10 million.

WFP estimates it will need around US$477 million to address hunger
needs in the region through to the end of the year, but it currently has a
40 percent shortfall in funding amounting to around US$190 million;

Advance planning and forward-purchasing of food has positioned to WFP
to respond to the current needs, but as food requirements grow, more
resources will need to be mobilised to address the needs of the hungry
across the Horn of Africa region;

WFP is procuring supplementary nutritious foods that are fortified with
vitamins and minerals to address malnutrition among vulnerable
children;

While addressing emergency food needs, WFP is using food assistance to
build resilience so that communities that are affected by recurrent
droughts are better equipped to cope with periodic food insecurity.

WFP is working with national governments in the drought-affected areas
and sharing the case-load of the numbers who require food assistance. As
hunger needs grow, we expect that governments will also step up their
efforts proportionately and will need additional support.
