M8546 - DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF ILLNESS IN

FAMILIES II Fall 2001

Credit: 4 Hours: 4 Class, per week

COURSE LEVEL: Third semester for FNP majors.

TEACHING FACULTY: FNP Faculty

DESCRIPTION: Utilizing a systems approach, the diagnosis and management of problems encountered in Primary Care are studied. Among the selected systems for study are neurological, dermatological, musculoskeletal, ophthalmological, psychological, and immunological. Upon completion of this course, the student will apply a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of selected health problems.

OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze historical, physical and laboratory findings to develop a differential diagnosis.

2. Design a plan of care that considers the biophysical and psychosocial needs of patient.

3. Evaluate the individualized plan of care and make changes when necessary.

4. Integrate knowledge of current research findings into clinical practice.

5. Explain the rationale for treatment.

6. Articulate the role of the FNP in illness management.

METHODOLOGY: The 4-credit didactic course is taught by lecture-discussion. It is designed to be taken in association with a clinical practicum.

A total of 5 diagnostic differential sheets are required as a group assignment on the designated topic dates.

Make-up examinations will be available only in extreme situations.

Late papers will be accepted only in extreme situations and only at the discretion of the course coordinator. One letter grade will be subtracted for each day the paper is late.
