The aim is to provide an update in the frontiers of cardiovascular science and each symposium focuses on either clinical or basic science research. Attendees are encouraged to actively participate, either in the form of a poster presentation or oral discussion, promoting cross-fertilization of ideas and assisting research direction within our own cardiovascular community. The scientific day was held at the Granite Club where over 350 registrants enjoyed a pleasant day of camaraderie, excellent science, and good food. This year the focus was on “Cardiovascular Care at the Millennium”. A central featured symposium exploring the evaluation of this care consisted of a number of speakers both local and invited. Dr. David Alter, Department of Medicine, ICES and Cardiology, spoke on “Trends and Variations in Cardiovascular Disease in Ontario-Highlights from the Cardiovascular Atlas”. Dr. Geoffrey Anderson, Associate Professor, Health Administration, University of Toronto, discussed “Research on Public Report Cards: Good Science or Good Politics?”. Dr. Jacques LeLorier, Professor, Depts of Medicine and Pharmacology, University of Montreal was the Annual Isadore E. Smith Lecturer, hosted by the CCR. He discussed “The Role of Patients and Healthcare Professionals in the Use and Misuse of Cardiovascular Drugs”. This session was followed by a refreshment break and then the focus shifted to therapeutic advances at the millennium. Topics covered included presentations on “CPAP for Advanced Heart Failure” (Dr. T.D. Bradley), “Off-pump Bypass” (Dr. Y. Leclerc), “Cell-based Research in Cardiac Xenotransplantation” (Dr. J.G. Coles) and “Gene Therapy for Paediatric Congenital and Adult Cardiovascular Disease” (Dr. M. Rabinovitch). After a very pleasant lunch, the afternoon began with Poster Presentations by our graduate and postdoctoral trainees. This was followed by an afternoon session which covered the “Approaches to Atherosclerosis at the Millennium”. This was highlighted by presentations on “Genetic Dissection of Atherosclerosis” (Dr. R.A. Hegele-Annual Guest Speaker), “Homocysteine and Atherosclerosis” (Dr. J.D. Spence-Annual Guest Speaker), “Inflammatory Heart disease and Autoimmunity: Chlamydia and Atherosclerosis” (Dr. J. Penninger), and “Anti-Atherosclerotic Properties of Wine” (Dr. D.M. Goldberg). There were 33 abstracts submitted for the poster session. A panel of judges preselected six poster finalists who were also asked to give a short oral presentation during a poster walkabout. An additional hour of poster viewing was available during the breaks and over lunch. These posters highlighted our cardiovascular trainees in their particular area of interest. Poster prizes, in the form of textbooks, were again generously provided by Lippincott-Ravin Publishers. 1st Prize 2nd Prize (Tied) 2nd Prize (Tied) A.I.M. Wittnich, Physiology) Note: No applications were received for the Spring 1999 competition. Bigelow Book Prize The Bigelow Book Prize consists of 2 books written by Dr. W.G. Bigelow entitled “Cold Hearts” and “Mysterious Heparin”. This prize was established in 1995 by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program to recognize and honour a pioneer clinician and scientist in the field of cardiovascular sciences. Awardees should exemplify the personal traits of Dr. Bigelow -curiosity, drive, and scientific integrity. The award is given in every year that a qualified student is identified. Qualifications include sustained academic scientific excellence, innovative experimental approaches, original discoveries and good scientific productivity. Some weight is given to work that has recognizable clinical relevance, especially that which promises to improve patient care. 1995 - Dr. John S. Ikonomidis 1996 - Ms. Shona M. Torrance 1997 - Dr. Vivek Rao 1998 - Dr. Bryce Cowan 1999 – Dr. Gideon Cohen Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Funds (OSOTF) Award The OSOTF award refers to a class of awards which have resulted from Ontario government’s “matching” program. Under the program every dollar of donation received for student assistance has been matched by the government as well as the university on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program participates in this program. There are two major conditions for all OSOTF awards; recipients must be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need. However, the Program has additional eligibility criteria, including excellence in science and academic performance, that must be adhered to. One competition will be held per academic year, except for the inaugural competition year where two competitions were held. The applications are handled centrally through the Faculty of Medicine’s, Research Office. Applications pertaining to the CSCP are sent to us and are then adjudicated by a subcommittee; chaired by Dr. D. Cheng. Committee recommendations are then forwarded to the OSOTF Awards Committee (Faculty of Medicine) where the final decision is made. Of this years eligible submissions, all were deemed meritorious and the awards were allocated equitably to the winners as follows: Fall 1998 Competition Karim Bandali, PhD, Dept. of Physiology Jack Wallen, PhD, Dept. of Physiology Spring 1999 Competition Karim Bandali, PhD, Dept. of Physiology Jack Wallen, PhD, Dept. of Physiology Cathy Boscarino, MSc, Dept. of Physiology Lecture Series For this academic year the lecture series was focused in two main areas: Heart Function and Vascular. A number of interesting speakers, once again, contributed their time and knowledge. Both these areas were covered from the perspective of whole body and organ to the molecular level including genetics, with a particular emphasis on bridging basic science and clinical approaches to these areas. 2nd Annual “Cardiovascular Disease Update” The 2nd Annual Cardiovascular Disease Update was successfully held on February 27, 1999 at the Weston Prince Hotel, Toronto. This annual CME event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Bristol-Myers Squibb. The purpose of this half day event is to provide clinical insight into the diagnosis and treatment of current cardiovascular disease from a bench-tobedside perspective. This year the focus was on issues relating to women and heart disease, hypertension and drug therapies. Each session was accompanied by audience discussion which continued informally during the buffet luncheon. The meeting was accredited for 4 Mainpro-MI credits and 5.2 MOCOMP credits and was attended by 121 Family Physicians and Internists from across Toronto. The speakers and topics were: Dr. Beth Abramson, Lecturer, Dept. of Medicine, University of Toronto Cardiologist and Director, Women’s Cardiovascular Health, St. Michael’s Hospital “Diagnosis of Chest Pain in Women: Looks May Be Deceiving” Dr. Paul Oh, Lecturer, Clinical Pharmacology, University of Toronto Clinic Director, Cardiovascular Assessment & Rick Evaluation, Sunnybrook Health Science Centre “Caveats & Pearls – What the Family Practitioner Needs to Know When Following the Post-MI, CHF, or Angina Patient” Dr. David Mendelssohn, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto Nephrologist and Director of Peritoneal Dialysis, St. Michael’s Hospital “Diabetes and Hypertension: A Potpourri of New Information” Dr. Jules Yt Lam, Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Montreal Cardiologist, Montreal Heart Institute “Differentiation of the Statins” Summer Activities The Collaborative Program, along with the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Surgery, ran another very successful summer program. Applicants included undergraduate and medical school students from the University of Toronto as well as other universities. The Collaborative Program provided a number of summer scholarships to help students who were unable to procure funding. Over the course of the summer, seminars were presented by graduate students currently enrolled in the Collaborative Program and covered a range of topics with both clinical and basic science relevance. As well, the summer students were given the opportunity to present their summer work. An “end-of-summer” luncheon is held for both faculty and students. This highly successful program is enjoyed by all who participate. During this academic year we had our 7-Year OCGS review which went resoundingly well, and resulted in a renewal mandate. The CSCP also continues to develop new liaisons with departments expressing an interest in cardiovascular sciences. Specifically, the Department of Rehabilitation Science was welcomed to the program. The CSCP also came to a crossroads this year. On the one hand there was the successful OCGS review endorsing our effort. On the other hand it became clear we had reached the maximum capacity of what the Program could accomplish with existing financial and personnel resources. For the Program to continue to grow, a fully committed administrative individual, focused on the initiatives of the Program, is critical. To secure this, a stable financial infrastructure is needed to fund this individual. All activities depend on this basic administrative need which could no longer be met without a fully designated individual to handle the day-to-day administration. After lengthy negotiations with a number of parties this issue was addressed. The following graph represents the enrolment figures. It can be seen that during the current academic year we had 13 Masters and 9 PhD trainees active in the program. There was a significant number of our trainees who completed and convocated which, this year for the first time, exceeded recruitments. With the Program’s resounding endorsement by the SGS and OCGS, it is clear our focus needs to be student recruitment. To date, no targeted efforts have been made but we have relied on word of mouth and student satisfaction. This approach, as can be seen from previous years figures, has been quite successful – resulting over the years in a 4fold increase enrolment. However, the time has come to expand our base and share the potential of this value added experience with all students through a more aggressive information and recruiting campaign. Up until and including this year, this was not possible as the Program did not have a fully committed administrative individual with the time to launch and maintain such an effort. With this issue reaching a potential resolution, we are now in a position to initiate a student recruitment drive. 24 20 16 MSc 12 PhD 8 Total 4 0 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 I continue to meet with the students on an annual basis to ensure continued satisfaction with the program. From these interviews it was decided to expand the student representation on the Executive Committee to two (a junior student who has recently started their training and a senior student). These students will also organize the various student activities for the Program. The postgraduate follow-up illustrated that the graduates of this past year have gone on to pursue either academic or research careers. (see Convocated section of Report). As part of the tradition, bound copies of each graduating students' thesis is kept in the program office. The CSCP awards programs helped support a number of our trainees. The Medtronic Travel Award monies made it possible for a number of students to attend scientific meetings and present their work. As well, the OSOTF bursary monies provided much needed financial relief to a number of deserving students in the Collaborative Program. These funds will be available on an annual basis to help those with demonstrated academic and research excellence that are in financial need. Corporate sponsors such as Bristol-Myers-Squibb and Merck Frosst Canada continue to be recognised for their outstanding annual support of graduate education in the cardiovascular sciences area at the University of Toronto. The Bigelow Book Prize is awarded in recognition of an outstanding graduate student in the program and is the most prestigious student award given annually. Apart from the annual luncheon, a plaque is now planned to commemorate this annual event. Due to the popularity of course MSC 3060/3061, it has been redesigned into 4 modules. These new modules will be submitted to the SGS for approval which will create new course designations. Thus, once approved, there will be 4 courses on advanced topics in cardiovascular sciences for our trainees to select from: MSC3060 - Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms, MSC3061 - Hormones & the Cardiovascular System, MSC3062 - Heart Function, MSC3063 Vascular. Continued frequent review of these courses will occur to ensure that current technologies and research foci, that are leading edge, are represented. This is critical if they are to serve as our flagship courses for our trainees. The second annual CV Update was again jointly run with the generous support of Bristol Myers Squibb. This half-day event provided a clinical update and insights to interested trainees, specialists and general practitioners in the cardiovascular field. Each year a different focus will be highlighted (see appropriate section in report) We look forward to working with the newly created Heart & Stroke/Richard Lewar Centre of Excellence (HSRLCE) at the University of Toronto. The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the family of Richard Lewar jointly donated $13 million to establish this cardiovascular Centre. The purpose of this Centre is to bring cutting edge cardiovascular research together at the University and become an international leader of cardiovascular research. A search was conducted and Dr. Peter Liu was established as Director. The Centre’s mandate includes research in cardiovascular disease, focusing on the prevention and cure of atherosclerosis, heart failure and congenital heart disease. There will also be a transgenic physiology core facility at the FitzGerald Bldg. With the Collaborative Program’s role in education and the Centre’s role in research, hopefully we can take advantage of these strengths by avoiding duplication and providing an outstanding second-to-none cardiovascular initiative. This relationship will be further explored in the upcoming year. For the 1999-2000 academic year, we plan to continue our current activities and pursue the following priorities: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Firm up a 5-year plan for the program. Actively recruit students to the program. Create a Student Guidebook with course listings to help selection. Hold the first Student Research Day, February 2000. Target clinical residents doing 1-2 years of research for recruitment into formal graduate program where appropriate. 6. Further develop CME programs. 7. Further secure infrastructure support via endowments.
