IN MEMORIUM
It is sad for me to report the passing of Charles "Bud" Leville Mumma on 6
May 2003. Bud was one of the participants in the MUMMA Surname DNA testing project and it is unfortunate that he did not live so see the current project results. Bud was a descendant of Christian Mumma whom we have now identified as a descendant of the immigrant, Peter Mumma. Bud was an avid researcher and collector of Mumma "stuff", no matter where it came from. He shared with me a number of interesting and little known facts about the family. - Bud, we miss you.

MUMMA SURNAME DNA PROJECT
Great progress has been made with the Mumma DNA project. The latest results, covering three years effort, are now available for viewing at http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm It is a big file, (480 KB) so be patient if you are using a dial-up modem connection as there are lots of graphs and tables to view. We are still awaiting the results of 4 additional men.
Probably the most exciting thing was the results from one participant who is a known descendant of Peter Mumma, the immigrant. His DNA "fingerprint" perfectly matched that of the two descendants of the “unattached” Christian
Mumma (who migrated to Springfield, Ohio). While there was circumstantial evidence that Christian was a descendant of Peter, this DNA evidence is the clinching evidence. Of course we don't know from which son he descends, but birth dates narrows the possible connection to only one or two of Peter's sons. This was the kind of result I dreamed about when the project was launched 3 years ago and now it has become a reality. As the DNA testing techniques become more refined, additional information will become available to assist in defining specific Mumma branches. In time, we might be able to use DNA testing to even identify from which son of Peter Christian descends.
There is a project sign-up link on the DNA report. I would appreciate more men participating in the project and assist us in mapping and defining the
MUMMA surname DNA fingerprint.
DATABASE CHANGES & ADDITIONS
A new database was uploaded to the web site on June 6, 2003 and it now includes 56,438 individuals/descendants. Some of the additions, changes and corrections are quite significant and I would like to thank all of you who supplied corrections and additions: o John Mumma & Barbara Bowers -
I believe there is sufficient evidence to support the fact that John Mumma who married Barbara Bowers, normally listed as the son of immigrant David
Mumma, was not his son. The Baltimore records suggest that David's son, by the name of John, accompanied him and the rest of the family to Baltimore.
Several children of a Baltimore John Mumma were baptized in the First
Reformed Church of Baltimore. I believe this John died prior to 1786 because he is not mentioned in his brother's Will. The brother, Abraham, gave land to all of his brothers and sisters, but there is no mention of a brother named John. Likewise, when David, the father, wrote his Will in 1787, he named all of his children and again, there was no mention of a son named
John, so I must presume that John was already dead.
So who is this John Mumma who married Barbara Bowers? I believe that John may have been the son of Lorentz Mumma, the immigrant who arrived in 1747.
This is pure speculation, but we know Lorentz had children when he died in
1752 and none have ever been identified. After Lorentz died, his widow remained in Hempfield Township, possibly staying with George Anthony, Peter, or David Mumma. When David, the immigrant, decided to move to Baltimore, a
John Mumma became the owner of David’s farm. I believe that it is possible that this John (son of Lorentz?) was coming of age, and possibly inherited money left to him by his father. I believe it is he who bought David's land in Hempfield township. It has usually been believed that the John who took over the farm was David’s son.

Anyway, this John Mumma, who married Barbara Bowers, moved from Hempfield
Township in Lancaster County to Hanover, York county, PA. The DNA testing of one of this John's descendants showed he carried the exact MUMMA DNA
"fingerprint". It will take more research to untangle this web. o Mummas of Baltimore
Rather extensive work has been done involving a number of researchers sorting out the Mumma families of Baltimore. What complicates the issue is a
Solomon Mummey resided in the area and many records are incorrectly listed with the MUMMEY (or MUMMY) surname when it should be MUMMA, and visa versa.
Fortunately, most of the Mummey descendants migrated from Baltimore by about
1800. This is just a word of caution when looking at the Baltimore records.
One cemetery in which a large number of the pioneer Mumma families are buried is Green Mount in Baltimore. Some photographs of the Mumma family plots and a listing of the burials can be viewed in the MUMMA Archives at: http://www.mumma.org/archives.html#Cemetery

There were a number of Mummas who died in the early 1800's and all had similar names and named their children similar. Most were not literate and few wills and other documents exist to help sort everyone out into their respective branches. o 1850 Census for Hempfield Township of Lancaster County, PA.
A little piece of information and warning. The 1850 census for Hempfield
Township of Lancaster County was assembled incorrectly and the pages are not in their proper order. There is a consistent error that occurred during the assembly of the census. If you need to look at pages on either side of the one you are viewing, be sure and verify the "visitation number" (the one in the first column) is numerically correct. If there is a break in the numbering, you may have to look a few pages on either side to find the correct sequential page. This drove me crazy until I discovered this error.
It is important to have the correct page order when viewing the neighbors and where other relatives lived. The error was discovered when a Mumma family was split between two census pages. In addition, I found 1 blank image and 2 duplicate images on the Ancestry web site.

o Mumma's of Ogle County, Illinois
Through the help of several of you and the Ogle County GenWeb coordinator, extensive work was done sorting out the Ogle County Mummas. This group migrated from Washington County, MD in the mid 1800's. These are the Mumma families of Sharpsburg, MD whom I label as the “Antietam Mummas”. Confusion existed due to similar given names and ages of several of the men who first migrated. Finally it was determined that two of these Mumma men were not descendants of the Sharpsburg progenitor, Jacob, but descendants of Jacob's brother, Henry Mumma. It became quite entangled, but I feel these families are now fairly well straightened out into their respective branches.
O Mumaws of Pickaway Co., OH
George H. Mumaw and John Wesley Mumaw were connected together as brothers and many of their descendants identified who continue to reside in the
Pickaway or nearby counties. Currently they are listed as sons of Conrad
Mumaw, sometimes listed as “Conrad Mumaugh”, the son of Joseph Mumaugh, b.
1805. Work remains to verify these are one in the same persons. o There were numerous other changes to the database and the merging of small branches and twigs. I have forgotten about all of the various ones that occurred during the 6 months since the last update. Again, if I neglected to mention your branch, I apologize. Life gets hectic.
CORRECTIONS o Several of you caught several errors I made in Bulletin #21 regarding the inscription on George Muma's tombstone. I used the transcription found in
Richard Huffman' book which said:
"GEORG MUMA IST GESTORBEN DEN 9 MAY INT JAHR 1835 SEID ALTER DAR 72 YAHR
4 MONATE UND 18 TAGE".
There were several German spelling errors and the proper wording would be:
"Georg Muma ist gestorben den 9 May im Jahr 1835. Sein Alter war 72 Jahr 4
Monate und 18 Tage"
The words "INT" and "DAR" are either incorrectly inscribed on the stone or they were incorrectly transcribed from the stone. So, there can be errors carved on tombstones or transcription errors.
Not only those errors, but I really booted it when I translated the words. I simply didn't proof read what I wrote and changed "1835" to "1837", as well as writing "birth when it should have said "died".
An alternate translation of George's inscription would be.
"George Muma died the 9th of May 1835. His age was 72 years, 4 months, and
18 days". [Note: I still contend his age was 82 years from all other evidence]

o Christian Muma of Rapho Twp - In Bulletin #21 I mentioned the following regarding Christian Muma's wife:
"From Hampshire County land sales, it appears he had two wives.
One by the name of Nancy and later, a wife by the name of Ann."
Michael Burgess wrote me to say:
"In the eighteenth century, particularly in Virginia, the name
'Nancy' is almost always a nickname for "Ann(e)" or "Anna," and
mostly didn't exist as a separate name. Thus, Christian Mumma
probably only had the one wife. Nancy doesn't start showing up
as an actual separate given name for women until the first
decades of the 19th century."
Thanks Michael! You are absolutely correct and I found a few other cases in the database where 'Nancy' was used as a nickname for 'Anna' this was another good lesson.
INTERESTING STUFF o New surname maps http://www.gens-us.net/
This is an interesting site created by a group of Italians that will display a map of the United States with different colors, depending on the surname density for each state. I believe they used one of the telephone CD's as the database, then extracted surname information based on states. You can try some fairly unusual surnames and it will probably match fairly closely current telephone listings found when you search the “Switchboard” or similar Internet directories. Anyway, it is interesting and a little different than some of the other maps that display surname frequency based on census data. o Interesting Antietam Battlefield Web sites
