World War I, often called The Great War, broke out in Europe in August 1914. For three years
the ground war became a stalemate between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers, while the
United States attempted to remain neutral. On January 31, 1917 German declared unrestricted
submarine warfare, and on March 18 three American merchantmen were sunk by U-Boats.
On April 6 the Congress could remain neutral no longer and passed a declaration of war. Over
the following year, nearly two million soldiers were marshaled and transported by ship to Europe
for combat duty. Though the first major ground combat action would not occur until the spring
of 1918, in that year of preparation the men of the U.S. Navy faced challenges at sea. Before the
first Medal of Honor was earned on the ground during the battle of Chateau-Thierry more than a
year after war was declared, by that time eleven sailors had earned Medals for their heroism on
the high seas.

The first real test of the American soldiers and marines began on May 28, 1918 when the untested
US forces repulsed the strong German spring offensive at Cantigny near the Belleau Wood. One
week later the combined U.S. 2nd Division (half Army and half Marine) halted the German
advance at the strategic village of Château-Thierry.
On June 6 the U.S. 2nd Division began its own offensive, driving deep into the enemy-held Belleau
Wood, where the Germans had been poised only fifty miles from Paris. By the end of June the
German spring offensive was completely broken and the Doughboys and Marines had built a
legend of valor on the Western Front.

On August 21 a Naval seaplane pilot earned the first Medal of Honor by an American airman in
Austria. One month later near Pensacola, Florida a second Naval aviator earned the Medal of
Honor for his heroism following a non-combat air accident.
These two first heroes of the air established a legacy that would soon be followed by four Army
and two Marine Corps aviators in the closing weeks of The Great War.

America
On the Offensive
Prior to the American victories at Cantigny and Chateau-Thierry the Germans were threatening
Paris. The failure of the German spring offensive and the heavy June-July battles that cleared the
enemy presence in the fortified Belleau Wood put the German Army in full retreat.
The withdrawing forces pulled back to two sanctuaries, heavily fortified throughout the war and
nearly impervious to outside attack. In north France the Germans withdrew to their heavily
reinforced Hindenburg Line. On the Western Front the retreating Germans found sanctuary in
the dense Argonne Forest and the long-held salient at St. Mihiel.
It was these very sanctuaries, laced with barbed wire, tunnels and concrete or wooden bunkers,
that had kept the ground war in stalemate for three years. They created a north-south front line
that either side moved forward in one attack, then lost ground in the face of fierce enemy
counterattack.
On September 12 American forces under the command of General John J. Pershing attacked the
St. Mihiel salient. The successful offensive was quickly followed by offensives in the Argonne
Forest and along the Hindenburg Line. In two months the German forces were crushed. Ninety
of the 119 Medals of Honor awarded in World War I were received for actions in this sixty-day
period from September 12 until November 11--Armistice Day.

Five Marines received BOTH the Army and Navy Medal of Honor for the same action.
These were the last men to become DOUBLE RECIPIENTS of the Medal of Honor.
Of nearly 2,500 Medal of Honor awards prior to World War I, only 49 were posthumous.
During World War I Medal of Honor recipients had a 27% mortality rate, the highest in
history to that point and nearly equal the rate of posthumous awards for all prior
wars/actions.
There are no living World War I Medal of Honor recipients. The last of these heroes,
Edouard Izac, died on January 18, 1990.
