1. Describe Jonathan Harker’s thoughts after he discovers the Count laying the table in
the dining room.
Jonathan is somewhat nervous and fearful when he sees Dracula setting the table. He
realizes that he and the Count are the only ones in the castle. (P. 38)
2. Count Dracula claims to be the ancestor of what famous warrior?
Dracula claims he is a descendent of Attila the Hun. (P. 39-40)
3. What does the Count warn Jonathan not to do when he is alone at night?
Jonathan is warned to not sleep anywhere but his room. Dracula says that Jonathan
would get “bad dreams” if he does. (P. 45)

Harker sees Dracula leave the castle one day. Dracula went out a window and headfirst
down the castle wall to the ground. (P 47)

Jonathan sees three beautiful women when he wakes up in the parlor. They are other
vampires, and were about to suck his blood. (P. 51)

The Count is furious that the women were about to suck Jonathan’s blood. He threw
them back, and yells at them for what they were doing. (P. 53-54)
7. What does Jonathan Harker believe he hears coming from the bag the Count had
thrown to the floor?
Jonathan hears what he thinks is a child, smothered by the bag. (P. 54)
8. What happens to the women and the bag?
The three women seemed to just fade away into the moonlight with the bag. (P. 54)

9. The Count instructs Jonathan to write three letters home. What is the content of these
letters?
The first letter was dated June 12, and said that Jonathan was planning on leaving soon.
The second, dated June 19, said Jonathan would leave the next day, and the last one,
dated June 29, said that he had left the castle and arrived at Bistritz. The Count said that
he would deliver these letters for Jonathan as he made progress. (P. 56)
10. Jonathan attempts to send letters home without the Count reading them. What
happens to the letters?
Jonathan tries to send the letters home by giving them to a Szgany, but the man just gives
it to Dracula. Dracula opens them in front of Jonathan and reads them. He says he will
deliver the one to Peter, but burns the letter to Mina. (P, 59)

On the morning of May 31, Jonathan sees that nearly all of his belongings are gone. (P.

16. Jonathan decides to climb the wall of the castle into the Count’s room. Describe what
Jonathan Harker discovers in the Count’s room.
Harker first sees that the Count’s room is mostly empty. It looks similar to the south
rooms. He then notices piles of gold from all around the world in a corner. Eventually
he sees a door that leads down to a ruined chapel. (P. 64-65)
17. Jonathan tells the Count that he wants to leave the night of 29 June, but he suddenly
changes his mind. Why?
When Jonathan tells the Count he wants to leave that night, the Count leads him through
the castle. They get to a door that Jonathan hears snarling wolves behind, and he gets
nervous. He believed that Dracula would feed him to the wolves. (P. 68)
18. What does Jonathan Harker find when he goes back to the Count’s room to look for a
key to the door?
Jonathan doesn’t see anything in Dracula’s “room,” and continues down to the chapel
where he saw him sleeping. One of the boxes that the Slovaks brought had a lid on it, so
Jonathan lifted it up to check inside. Dracula was lying inside, asleep, with blood
trickling from his mouth.
