Pirtle, MBA Coordinator International Studies & Programs University of Nebraska Medical Center University of Nebraska Medical Centre Omaha Electives for Trinity Students 2008 Updated on 16/02/2016 Elective in Medical Genetics and Metabolic Diseases This elective is a subspecialty of pediatrics. It provides excellent exposure to many rare genetic and metabolic diseases such as phenylketonuria, galactosemia, Gaucher’s disease, neurofibromatosis, fragile X syndrome and Down Syndrome. The Inherited Metabolic Disease Center is a New York State recognised referral center for Newborn Screening in the Lower Hudson Valley Region, serving the region directly north of New York City. Babies with positive screening tests for the metabolic disorders are referred directly to the Center for further evaluation. Students have the opportunity to observe all aspects of the clinical service. They are present at the clinical consultations during both the history taking and physical examination. They may also attend prenatal consultations with the genetic counselors. Students attend all staff meetings and consults both at Westchester Medical Center and at other hospitals throughout the Region. This elective is mainly clinically oriented. Based on the experience of those who have done this elective, having completed some work, either a medical school rotation or a previous elective in pediatrics, prior to starting this elective will be very helpful. A thorough revision of the biochemical pathways in advance will also be extremely helpful! To gain the most out of this elective, having access to a car is essential for travelling to the various hospitals. The daily schedule can range anywhere from 9am to 9pm but on average ranges from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Students do not go On-Call. The division staff are extremely friendly and very willing to teach. This elective would no doubt be a superb choice for any student, but especially for those who wish to go into pediatrics, as it provides a wide exposure to all age groups within pediatrics. Please give my email and tel no to TCD med students who are looking for elective here in the US.
