Graphic Organizer Template (posted on TeacherWeb)
When and where did your battle take place?
Who were the main groups involved?
Outline the main events that took place in your battle:
What was the result of your battle?
Why is your battle historically significant?
How does your knowledge of one battle enrich your understanding of: a) World War One as a whole? b) Canada’s role in World War One?
Recommendations – Use internet resources there are great photos online
Find more pictures than you need and select the three best ones
Each member of the group is responsible for finding and analysing one photo or painting. The focus of the photos needs to be the conditions or experience of this particular battle.
Outline key details from the photo that you feel are important
Infer any other logical information
Explain why this photo accurately demonstrates the conditions and or experience of that battle/battlefield.
Recommendations- Use the books from your research, you will likely find better info there
Look for firsts, why things matter, what impact does it have for Canada, the soldiers, the battle
You need to find a total of six (6) quotations that address the importance or significance of your battle.
Remember to source your quotations and set up your cards like the examples below.
Quotation Card Format
Author's last name and page number
“ Your quotation is taken directly from the text as you intend to use it. Any changes need to be placed in [square brackets] and any omission needs to be noted in an ellipse”
[ In square brackets underneath your quotation, you include how you think this piece of information demonstrates the importance of the battle to the war and/or to Canada ].
Print Source Example
Brown and Gimblett 54
“ The results [of the battle of the Somme] were disastrous…It was later said that there was almost no village… in Newfoundland that was not touched by the casualty list…The First of July still holds a somber tinge of remembrance in Newfoundland to this day”.
[This information demonstrates the impact of the cost of the Somme for Canada. Canadians paid a high price to demonstrate our valour and courage.]
Electronic Source Example
Somme BBC par 5
“It was a baptism of fire for Britain's new volunteer armies… They suffered catastrophic losses: whole units died together and for weeks after the initial assault, local newspapers would be filled with lists of dead, wounded and missing.”
[ Indicates the horrors of the Somme and why there was such a large impact on Newfoundland.
Your entire group should contribute to the organization of your MLA bibliography. That means you need to include all of the resources you used for this assignment (including photos).
Remember a bibliography must:
Be double spaced
Be in alphabetical order
Indent the second line 5 spaces
Use MLA 7 – The “Source It” document
