RULES 1. GENERAL RULES 1.1 The University’s General Rules for Students (see Handbook 3 of 2008) will apply, where appropriate, to all students registered for Summer Term courses. The specific rules that follow are framed in the context of these General Rules for Students. 1.2 University rules will, where appropriate, apply to Summer Term students who wish to obtain credit towards a degree or diploma of the University. 1.3 Students from outside institutions are subject to the rules of their home institutions with regards to granting of credits. 1.4 All UCT fees must be cleared before registering for Summer Term for any block. Refer to 2008 fee booklet for Summer Term fees for each course. Registration for Summer Term will be denied in cases where the fee debt of a UCT student exceeds R400 at the time of registration, irrespective of whether applicants are financial aid students or not. (Students may apply for financial aid during Summer Term on a separate form). 1.5 Students from outside UCT will be expected to pay their tuition fees and accommodation upfront Students who are not at UCT in 2008 must complete a standard application form and must pay the application fee, which is not refundable. Forms will be available from the Summer Term Office or on the UCT website. A certified copy of an academic transcript and a certificate of good conduct must be submitted with an application form to Central Admissions Office before being considered for admission in Summer Term. Please note that no applications will be processed without the prescribed application fee. (Note: No applicant who is writing Grade 12 or equivalent examinations at the end of 2007 will be admitted to the 2007/2008 Summer Term programme.) 1.6 Cancellation of courses: If fewer than 18 students have been admitted to a course by the dates set out below, then the course will not be offered. (a) 2008 November/December courses: Friday, 14 November Applicants will be informed via sms or emails if the course is cancelled. Students must ensure that they keep in touch with the Summer Term Office and provide this office with their current contact (cell phone) details. 2. REGISTRATION RULES 2.1 All students must meet the entrance requirements set for each course and/or must obtain a written permission from the HOD of the specified course 2.2 All students must complete a prescribed registration form. 2.3 Except with the permission of the Senate, no student may register for more than one November/December course. 2.4 Late registrations after the end of the second day of the first week of lectures will not be permitted. 3. 3.1 2.5 Students may submit their forms by post or fax (021 650 5497) to the Summer Term Office if they are unable to register while on campus. 2.6 No students will be allowed to attend lectures or tutorials, write class tests or write final examinations if they have not registered. 2.7 Students must inform the Summer Term office if they have cancelled their registration by Friday of the 1st week of lectures. Failure to do so will results in paying full amount of the course and final results will be recorded as DPR. 2.8 Success in a Summer Term course, where the course is recognised by the faculty in which the student is registered, will be taken into account in determining the readmission status of any student who has the SUP status. RULES FOR COURSES OFFERED DURING SUMMER TERM 2008/2009 Rules for all courses 3.1.1 November/December courses will be taught over the four-week period from Monday 24 November to Friday 19 December 2008. Final examinations will be held on 22 or 23 December 2008. 8.1.2 Each course will involve a minimum of 2 teaching periods of 45-minute duration per day for a total of 20 days during the 4-week teaching period. 8.1.3 Formal examinations will be held at the end of each course. These examinations will be moderated by, and the final results confirmed by, External Examiners to the University. 3.2 Rules for first-year courses 3.2.1 A first-year course may be taken by anyone who satisfies the entry requirement for that course and who: (a) (b) (c) is a registered student at the University of Cape Town, or a registered student in good standing at another Higher Education institution; is in possession of a full or conditional matriculation exemption certificate; or in the case of candidates who are 23 years of age or older and who do not have the full or conditional matriculation exemption certificates, have received the approval of the Director of the Centre for Open Learning. 3.2.2 All students registered at this university who wish to have a Summer Term course credited towards their degree must check in advance with their Faculty Offices to determine whether the credit will be accepted. 3.2.3 Students from other Higher Education institutions must confirm in advance with their home institutions that the Summer Term course will be credited. 3.3 Rules for second- and third-year courses 3.3.1 A second or third-year course may be taken by anyone who is a registered student at the University of Cape Town, or a registered student in good standing at another Higher Education institution, and who satisfies the entry requirements for that course. 3.3.2 Students from other Higher Education institutions must confirm in advance with their home institution that the Summer Term course will be credited. 3.3.3 4. 4.1 Final year students must inform their faculties when they successfully completed a Summer Term course, which enables them to meet the requirements for the degree and graduate in June. EXAMINATION RULES Examinations and class tests 4.1.1 Examination sessions for the Summer Term will be held on the following days: (a) November/December courses: 22 or 23 December 2008 Examination dates for (U) courses will differ from the above dates. Lecturers will announce the dates during lectures 4.1.2 If the examination set for a January course clashes with a University deferred/supplementary examination, preference will be given to the deferred/supplementary examination in the resolution of the clash. 4.1.3 HODs will approve the appointment of External Examiners for all Summer Term courses. 4.1.4 The examination requirements for Summer Term courses will be approved by the HoDs. 4.1.5 All Summer Term examinations will be written at venues determined by the Summer Term Office, in consultation with the Planning Unit. 4.1.6 The HoDs will confirm the final examination results of students in the Summer Term. 4.1.7 No unregistered students would be allowed to write class tests and/or final examinations. 4.2. Extra time in Examinations All students with permission for extra time in their examinations must inform the Summer Term Office with relevant documents to make suitable arrangements on time. 4.3 Supplementary Examinations Different rules from each faculty and/or departments will apply to permit a student write a supplementary examination for a Summer Term course. 4.4 Deferred Examinations No deferred examinations in the Third Term 4.5 Results Summer Term results and class test results are published on the Summer Term notice board and are posted on the web. Students registered for a Summer Term course in December will not be able to access their final results on the web for the current year if Summer Term fees have not been cleared. No results for students who have not registered will be published. 4.6 Marking Lecturers are requested to complete marking as soon as possible.
