The Lanes & the North Laine
Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, this historic quarter, bounded by East
Street, North Street, West Street and the sea, is a fabulous maze of narrow streets and ‘twittens’
(Black Lion Lane and Ship Street Gardens). Partially developed during the late 16 th and early 17th
century as the population of the small fishing town grew, most of the buildings appear to date
from the 18th and 19th century. The height of the buildings and materials used still convey the
atmosphere of a medieval town. The Lanes are still as popular today with their extraordinary mix
of jewellers, boutiques, specialist shops and cafes.
The North Laine is home to nearly 400 independent businesses ranging from the quirky to the
cutting edge.
Open: All year.
Accessibility:
 Fully accessible but please bear in mind that some of the twittens can be very narrow.
 Accessible toilet in Black Lion Street and Royal Pavilion Gardens.
