Information for Prospective External Placements
Thank you for considering hosting a student on the Oasis College undergraduate programme. Our students
are working towards a BA (honours) validated by Staffordshire University. These awards are designed to
support students to achieve the academic standard for an award at graduate level and the professional skills
associated with work involving children and families, young people or churches and communities. In the case
of Youth Work Awards this includes professional status as conferred by the National Youth Agency with JNC
recognition in Youth Work.
Throughout the award programme students are placed in fieldwork locations across south-east England and
commute one day a week to study in central London. They spend 16 hours a week in a main fieldwork
placement for 40 weeks of the year working with young people or children and families. In their second and
final years they also need to gain some experience of working with additional statutory or charitable sector
projects related to their award. Oasis College requires them to secure additional experience through
working/volunteering in these placements.
All students seeking external placements will have participated in a common first year (or equivalent)
confirming they meet national standards for work with children an families, young people, or churches and
communities as ‘support workers’. Thereafter they opt for their chosen specialism in youth work, children
and families work or church and community work. Your student will highlight the specialism they are
following.
The objective of the external placement is that students gain an insight in to the working of a different
organisation or project, and benefit from working with young people, children and families, or churches and
communities in a different context. The number of hours a student will commit to an external placement will
vary according to the student’s availability and external practice requirements. They may be able to volunteer
for a session each week for up to a year or for a block period of time. This can be discussed and negotiated
with the individual student who will explain their placement requirements.
If you are able to accept the student as a volunteer with your organisation or project then the College would
ask that an experienced worker in the project be designated as a supervisor of the student whilst in the
placement. This person should complete the placement registration form and return this to the College
where confirmation of the student’s status (including DBS clearance) will be sent to you on receipt. The
supervisor should also discuss with the student some aspects of the history and aims of the project, make
clear the expectations and limits of the students participation, and explain the various staff roles. The
supervisor will be asked to sign a simple form at the end of the placement to indicate the student’s
involvement and time sheets.
Thank you for giving this request your consideration, if you require further information on the student or
College then please contact the Fieldwork Practice Manager, indicated below. Thank you.
