Sangamon-Menard Extension Unit 4-H Project Activities and Exhibit Requirements Project: Visual Arts – (Including Advanced Visual Arts -- Draw/Fiber/Sculpt and Advanced Visual Arts -- Paint/Print/Graphics) Suggested for: Members of all ages Latest Starting Date: May 1 Recommended Project Activities: • Experiment with at least 3 of the following 11 medium: paper, fiber, clay, wood, chalk/carbon/pigment, glass/plastic, metal, nature, heritage arts, 3-D design/mixed media, and computer generated art. • Make a portfolio to hold your artwork. One example is given on page 4 of your member's manual (MF0115). • Spend two hours a week of leisure time on art. • Give a talk or demonstration related to the project. Project Exhibit Requirements: 1. Articles exhibited are to be made by the exhibitor, who is a participant in the Visual Arts Project. Articles must have been made during the current 4-H year. Exhibitors are encouraged to date the project when it is made. Artwork that is meant to be displayed on the floor or ground is restricted to 3' x 3' of floor space. Artwork or a total exhibit (i.e.multiple pieces) meant to be hung or placed on a shelf is limited to a size of 30” high x 30” wide x 12”deep. 2. Articles exhibited must be an original design created by the exhibitor. Copyrighted or trademarked designs are not acceptable. Kits and preformed molds are not considered original and are not acceptable in any Visual Arts Class. Team or school logos are not original. Combining parts of different patterns (pictures, photographs, images from the internet or a magazine) with the member's own ideas can result in an original design, but simply changing the color and/or size of a pattern does NOT make the design original. (Exception: Heritage Arts items may follow a pattern). Project members are encouraged to use kits or patterns throughout the year to learn new techniques and then apply them to developing an original design of their own for their project exhibit. 3. IF a photo, sketch, or other idea source was used, submit it with your entry, firmly attached to your exhibit. If being conference-judged, be prepared to explain how and where you got the idea for this project. Photos used as a source should be taken by the artist. 4. All entries must be properly prepared for exhibit. Items which are intended to be hung must be prepared for hanging. The hanging device must be strong enough to support the weight of the hanging object. Framed items not intended to be hung should be noted as such on the exhibit tag. 5. Drawings and paintings should be matted and framed, preferably under glass. (Exceptions: oil and acrylic paintings do not require glass and are not required to be matted.) Watercolor, chalk, pen & ink, computer generated art, etc. do require glass, acrylic, or some protective covering. There is no specific requirement for the type of mat used. 6. Stepping stones, painted rocks and scrapbooks are not acceptable in any visual arts class. Leather items should be entered under Heritage Arts. You may choose to exhibit up to one item in each of the eleven medium classes described below. However, you may only receive a maximum of six Visual Arts premiums. Even if you are enrolled in Visual Arts, Advanced Visual Arts -Draw/Fiber/Sculpt, and Advanced Visual Arts -- Paint/Print/Graphics, you can still just bring one item per media, and would still only be eligible for a maximum of six premiums. Please write the proper medium class on your entry tag for each exhibit.
