Clinical Microbiologist and Director, Program in Human Tissue Microbiology The FDA’s Center for Biologics
Evaluation and Research (CBER), Office of Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies (OCTGT) seeks an outstanding tenuretrack (Senior Staff Fellow) microbiologist to develop and lead a new research program and to perform related review and
policy work in the safety of human tissues for transplantation, particularly involving microbiological safety and
contamination. The major goals of the program are to advance both the understanding of tissue microbiology and the
development of measures to better assure the quality and safety of human tissues for transplantation. The tenure-track
person will serve as a Director and develop a scientific program in the area of human tissue microbiology, including
evaluation and development of improved methods for prevention and detection of contamination and of approaches to
pathogen inactivation. There are opportunities for related work that enhances the microbiological testing, quality and
safety of other biologics, such as vaccines and blood products. There will also be opportunities to develop scientific
collaborations both within CBER and FDA and with scientists from NIH, CDC, academia and industry. The Director will
also serve as a consultant and reviewer on tissue safety manufacturing, quality, regulatory and policy issues and as a key
member of CBER’s Tissue Safety Team, an interdisciplinary group responsible for coordinating ongoing tissue safety
activities. Support for this position will include initial core funding for the laboratory, support of technical staff, the
opportunity to recruit post-doctoral fellow(s), access to CBER’s excellent core molecular biology and animal facilities, and
access to many NIH and FDA services and facilities, including libraries and informatics. Laboratory facilities are currently
located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD and new facilities are expected to become available at FDA’s new White
Oak Campus in 2012.
Eligible individuals will be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents with an M.D. or Ph.D., with a minimum of five years of
relevant postdoctoral microbiology experience and expertise in the clinical, industrial or research setting and a record of
scientific productivity. Familiarity with tissue bank processing and with microbiological testing of human tissues is also
highly desirable. Candidates should have strong organizational and communication skills and be able to work in
multidisciplinary teams. The selected individual will establish and lead an independent research program in the area of
tissue safety including evaluation and application of novel and traditional technologies. Salary is commensurate with
education and experience with an excellent benefits package. The candidate may also be eligible for the PHS
Commissioned Corps.
