HONORARY FELLOWSHIP PROPOSAL FORM Honorary Fellowships of the Faculty may be bestowed on persons of eminence, who do not necessarily hold a medical qualification, but have rendered exceptional services to the science or practice of Forensic and Legal Medicine. Information will be used to carry out any reasonable activity related to the administration of the FFLM Fellowship process and is held subject to the Data Protection Act 1998 CCRRIITTEERRIIAA:: The form is designed, to allow proposers to provide information about candidates according to specific categories. This is of great help to advisors and the Board in assessing the relative merits of candidates. It is not essential that you complete every section, as some categories may not apply to some candidates. However, the more information you can give about a candidate, within the space available, the more informed will be the assessment. Honorary Fellows need not be medically qualified but should be deemed persons of eminence who have rendered exceptional services to the science or practice of Forensic and Legal Medicine. The criteria sought in each section is as follows: Criteria employed by the Board for assessing service impact: The candidates have made significant impact on the service in the field of their appointments. This could be by establishing a new service where there was previously no service; or, if such a service was previously available, by acting in a senior position of responsibility, by further improving it, or by introducing a range of new approaches or techniques; or by contributing substantially to the work of professional related medical charities or patient interest groups. On the other hand, if the candidate has simply “slotted in” to an already established service and has merely carried on, or has appeared to be doing the minimum necessary to fulfil a contract, then it may be appropriate to defer a recommendation on this criterion. Criteria employed by the Board for assessing contribution to education: The candidate has made an out-of-the-ordinary contribution to undergraduate or postgraduate medical education e.g. by organising or making a significant contribution to educational courses, by taking on a substantial burden of career guidance or a Faculty tutorship, or by publication of significant educational material. Criteria employed by the Board for assessing contribution to research: The candidate has contributed to the advance of their specialty by research that is relevant and of good quality. Results of the research will have been presented at regional, national or international conferences, or been published. KKEEYY PPO OIIN NTTSS:: Honorary Fellowship is not granted automatically. In the first instance, the Fellowship Committee considers each proposal confidentially before making recommendations that are then considered by the Board. Irrespective of the proposal route, all nominations are reviewed and assessed by the Fellowship Committee who may take advice from regional and specialty advisers, and from international advisers if appropriate. It is a thorough but confidential process, which does not involve the candidates directly but evaluates their suitability for election. There is no quota and each proposal will be judged on its merit. Even at the late stage of circulating all Fellows with successful names via the Blue List, the offer of Honorary Fellowship maybe withdrawn if serious objections are raised. After the relevant Board meeting, the Registrar writes to the new Honorary Fellows, to make the formal offer of Honorary Fellowship. It is worth noting that if a candidate is not elected in one year, they can be proposed again in subsequent years. They are not brought forward automatically by the Faculty and so the onus is on the proposer to submit a new proposal form. How has the candidate made significant impact on the service in the field of their appointment? How has the candidate made an out of the ordinary contribution to undergraduate or postgraduate medical education? How has the candidate contributed to the advance of their specialty by research? All proposals are confidential. Acknowledgement will not be sent unless requested. Each proposal should be made on a separate form and is valid for one year.
