Memorial Scholarship
History:
The Avery Drew Swenson Memorial Scholarship was established in her memory in
January 2013. At the age of 8, Avery Drew was involved in a tragic accident while snow
sledding with family and friends. In her short life she touched many. Avery Drew was a
fun, loving, compassionate, thoughtful, and giving child who always put others before
herself. She was artistic and creative. Avery Drew was a leader who served as a
representative on Greensville Elementary Student Council Organization in second grade.
She participated in Music TAG in third grade and enjoyed the Art Enrichment Program.
Avery Drew participated in girl scouts from kindergarten until her passing. Avery Drew
was a kind hearted spirit, loving daughter and sister, a good friend to many and so full of
life that she inspired others to live, laugh, and love.
Purpose:
The Avery Drew Swenson Memorial Scholarship exists to offer financial assistance to a
worthy student who demonstrates not only high standards of academic achievement, but
also exemplifies selflessness and the ability to put others happiness before their own. It is
through this scholarship that Avery Drew’s memory will always live on.
Eligibility Criteria:



a member of the graduating class of Greensville County High School (who
plans to attend college or technical/vocational school)
applicants must have at least a 2.5 grade point average
must be of good character
Process:
Students wishing to apply for a scholarship should complete the application form and
submit it with the required materials on or before the April 30th deadline. The application
and required materials can be submitted to the Guidance department or mailed to the
Scholarship Committee. The scholarship recipient will be announced during Senior
Awards Night.
Expectations:
The following is expected of individuals who receive scholarship assistance:


Do their best academically
Use the scholarship towards tuition of other required costs of their education

Letters of Recommendations
Please submit two letters of recommendation, written on your behalf by non-family members.
These letters should be given directly to you from the individuals you choose, sealed in a standard size
business envelope, with your First & Last Name, and “Recommendation Letter” written on the front.

The Scholarship Committee is glad that you have shown an interest in higher education by applying to
the Avery Drew Swenson Scholarship fund. This instruction sheet is provided to help you accurately
complete a Scholarship Application Form. Please read and follow these instructions carefully. The
Scholarship Committee wishes you much success in your academic pursuits.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS



Your completed application package must be submitted by April 30th
Applications received after April 30th cannot be considered
You need to complete the Scholarship Application Form in its entirety
Please write as neatly as possible. The Scholarship Application Form is self-explanatory, containing
information to fill in. When filling in a blank, if that information is not applicable to you, please enter N/A.
All blanks with fill in information need to be completed.
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
1. The following items make up your completed applications package. Make sure we receive
everything:




The Scholarship Application Form (both pages)
The Student Essay
The two Letters of Recommendation
These letters should be given directly to you from the individuals you choose, sealed in a
standard sized business envelope, with your First & Last Name, and “Recommendation
Letter” written on the front.

2. Do this to ensure that we do receive everything:


Put the above four items in a 9 x 12 envelope; seal the envelope closed.
On the front of the envelope write your First & Last Name and “Avery Drew Swenson
Scholarship Application.”
3. It is suggested that you or a family member bring the envelope to the school and give it to the
Guidance Counselor. If you mail your application it must be received by April 30th at the following

4. If you are selected to receive a scholarship you will receive an award letter with instructions on how
to proceed. Proof of acceptance into the school of your choice will be needed before the scholarship
can be awarded.
